HOT TIMES
In tiic Old Town, Tltotltjh a
Qiliet Election. '
FAST AND FURIOUS
For he First Three Hours, rhe
Old Ticket Winning
Home bits never before wit
nessed quite so warm a primary
< lection as the one being held in
in the court house today. And
yet, with all the interest mani
fested and with scores of work
ers bunting for votes, up to 3
this p. ifi there had been no
cross words and no “scrapping.”
During the first hour, from 7
to 8 o’clock ‘2lO votes were polled
From Bto 9 o’clock 217 votes
were cast. From 9to If) 213
were polled, making a total of
649 votes.
At 10:30 700 ballots had been
deposited, but from that time on
the voting lagged, and only 1000
votes had been polled up to 2
o’clock this afternoon. •
The “ringsters” were early at
the polls and had run in about
75 b Hots before the Yopng
Men's I) inocratic Club, 42
strong, including about 10 can
didates. and lead by the East
Rome band, arrived at the polls.
The arrival of this secret po
litical organization with about
40 votes, nut zest into the tight
and both sides began an active
campaign for votes.
The brass band went up town
and soon returned with a score
or more of Rome cotton factory
operatives. This voted the only
two organizations the •■new” or
“reform ticket had to vote, and
whiiu ii; did not put the reform
ers anywhere near the lead it
ha.l the dh ct of encouraging the
j workers on that side.
j In the meantime, the “ring-
I sters,’’while not organized, went
at the work before them in a
| !“winning way” and set a sac
( or the “reformers’’ that no ‘re
orm” crowd could endure.
At the Rome box, the “ring’
!is certain to win out with its en
tire ticket, running from 175 to
300 majerity.
At noon a telephone message
i from Cave Spring stated that
125 votes had been counted and
that Vandiver was 11 ahead of
Sanford and Williamson was 9
ahead of Camp. This was good
n* ws to the ring ticket as it had
1 j been believed all along that
' Cave Spring would give the r*
formers abi majority.
At 1: 30 a messenger came in
from Flatwoods. He stated that
1 of the 76 votes polled when h ■
left, the ring ticket had received
' 55.
A rumor was set afloat at
s that hour stating that the nev.
’ ticket had carried Watters by 1 >
f and Etowah by 21, but the re
1 port could not be verified.
At 2 o’clock a report was
1 brought in to the effect tha
1 Lindale had gone solid for the
“, old ticket.
A cit zen from Everetts stated
1 ‘that a light vote would be poll
* jed in that district and that th
D Democrats were about evenly
- divided.
He stated that at Floy !
1 Springs about 75 men were
• present to vote. This is Deputy
’ Sheriff Craws Moore’s district
t and the old ticket is confident of
t a good majority.
• At 4 o’clock this afternoon
some 1200 votes had been polled
i in the Rome precinct. 'The man
i agers are of the opinion tha
■ 1400 votes will be polled in th
■ city.
The indications point to
1 heavy vote in the county <1
- tricts and that the new tick*
t may come to town with a ma-
* jority of from 75 to 125 votes

-< 'ii at th R >me box, and from

that Allo ). Candler will carry
