NEXT GOVERNOR I:
K Splendid Editorial From.;’
Tilt; Atlanta Constitution ;
* . i
1
UPON THIS SUBJECT !
Allen D Candler, The Grand
Old Commoner.
Under the heading of “Our next
Governor.” yesterday’s Atlanta
Constitution p übl i s b e s
as its “leader” the following well '
rounded treatment of the » “sub-1
j ct.”
our nfxt governor. |
• I
The result of yesterday’s pri—;
rr.ary has been fores' en from the I
first by observant persons, and
ibis certainty deprives the victory 1
of Colonel Candler of a portion, '
at least.£ >f the enthusiasm that '
would be ( isplayed had the contest
been a close c r a doubtful one,
but from the v» ry beginning,
there has been no doubt and
no uncertainty.
Nevertheless, the result is
rbundantly gratifying. The peo
ple have nominated for their gov
ernor a man whose courage and in
tegrity have I) en tested in many
fields, and whose experience is
rich and ripe Col, Candler is a
plain man and in that respect he
differs in no respect from the
great majority of the people of
Georgia. His methods, as wMI
as hie manners, are simple and
old-fashi med. Defeat would not
have marii'd his temper i.nd sue-
, I
cess will not. puff him up with
pride.
Wbat he was and is as a private
citizen that she will be as governor'
> of tie >rg a. ID will give to the
aif .;irs_of th.* same sin*
core, honest and untiri ig atto: -
t on that he has given to his own.
The reforms he will suggest,
and the change lie will introduce,
«ill all be in the direction of simp
licity and economy. He will not
employ the power and influence ol
his office to make himself a polit
ical boss. He will not be bossed ,
himself, and he will not seek to
boss o'hers.
In short, Colonel Candler will
make an ideal governor, not only
because he is thoroughly equipp' d
tor the duties of the office, bur be
cause he will giVv lhe*a,tate a whifl
of the old-tune simplicity and
sincerity that Georgians cherish
and admire.
In respect of these things, there
fore, the triumph of Colonel Can
dler is a triumph for the people
i themselves. They have won for
themselves a victory by nomin
I ting for governor a man whost
qualities of mind and heart art
| such as made our public men
famous in the old days, when
political honors were measured by
the confidence and affection ot
1 the people, rather than by thi
temporary power and influence of
those who held offiee.lt the thing
were separable, we verily beh' v
ihat Allen D. Candler would
rattier have the vote of confidenc
which the people of Georgia have
given him than to wield the power
and influence of the governor i
office.
i'huchjioe of Colonel Candler
as the democratic candidate for
g ivernor is in no sense a n fl -cti >n
on his two opponents. Both ar<
young, both have distinguished
| themselves in the councils oflhe
state, and both stand high m th' 1
edeem of the people. The cam
ip sign they have made has given
'hem an opportunity to me t the
'people, and has been the means >1
affording them relaxation from
