PRES. HARRISON'S VIEWS
On Th® Heroic Act of The No
ble Alabamian.
Chicaco. June, 7—“ l consider
the American navy, ship for ship,
jtun for gun, and mau for man,
unequalled by navy m the world
to ay,’ T says former President
Harrison. “The courage and
daiing of our men, the personnel
of the officers of <ur ships, the
gunnery, the nerve and spirit
manifested in all done, offer to
the world the spectacle of navy for
which there is superior.’’
Wtnle declining, for obvious
reaseiiß, to discuss the war itself.
Mr. Harrison spoke with enthu
siasm ot the greatness of the act
of Lieut. Hobson in sinking the
Merrimac in the harbor of S intta
g°
“The act of Lieut. Hobsen ”
he said, ‘has few if any parallels
in the history of the world. At
Manila »he act of C mmedore
Hewey wav brave, but he entered
a hostile harbor able to give shot
tor sh r t to beat down his assail
ants, to triumph by the fo’ce of
his own arms.
Lieut. Htobscn and hii heroic
crew not only went with the Mh -
imac into th« range of an awful '
lire, unable to re pI y, but
the interior of their own
vessel was loaded with torpedo* s
for her dt struction al the proper
time. They went in unable to
fire one gun at the enemy, and
prepared to destroy the very deck
under th> ir r eet. We search the
pages of history in vain to find
some act h iroism for cou . try
and flag that appr aches this,”
