Gadsden, Ala - , June 11
(Special)—On May 21st, Parker
Roe, a well known dentist o’
Piedmont, was found dead on
the roadside,' about ten miles
Scutl) of Piedmont at 12 o’clock
n the morning, with his throat
cut from ear to ear, Ijing in a
pool of his own blood.
Lum Evans, a stove drum
mer. was suspected of vbe awful
crime and was arrested on sus
picion and afterwards confessed
to doing the bloody deed.
He was carried to Gadsden
and lodged in jail to await a
preliminary hearing. lie was
tried before a justice of the
peace yesterday and sent to jail
without bond.
In his statement he claims
Roe and several of his friends
started to Piedmont together
from Gadsden. Roe took his
>wn cart and horse and a man
by the name of McElery, went
in a hack with me.
Evans says: “Roe asked me
for a drink and 1 told him the
bottle was broken, but he still
insisted on me giving him the
bottle. 1 handexl it to him and
ae emptied the contents before
reaching Piedmont. Roe got too
drunk to ride by himself, so we
took ’nimin the hack with U 3. He
soon went to sleep and when we
woke him up to try to get him
to stay al! night ata farm house,
)<■ got in a rage and said his
pocket book was gone and ths
he had it before getting in the
hack with us. He pulled out a
knife and cut me nnder the
shoulder. In self defense 1 was
compelled to kill him.”
McElroy was also sent to jail

Evans is well known in Rome
and lived here at one time.
Mr. R, L. Chamlee was em
plpyed to defend Evans by the
Moulders’Union. Mr. Chamlee
returned from Grdsden I hurs
lay and made a strong light for
his client, but the evidence was
so strong against him he was
sent to jail and will be tried at

court, and some sensational de
velopments are expected.

Cuberson received a telegram
from General Manager Polk, of
the Santa Fe road informing
him that the through train car
rying mail and express had been
oeld up last night near Coleman
tud robbed ; that the fireman
had been badly wounded by
robbers and asking for state
rangers to pursue the bandits.
The governor answered that
there were uo rangers in the in
terior of the state at this time,
