TEXAS RANGERS NEEDED
But Were Reported as Doing
border Duty.
l.ll —»■ l ■■ ■■ ■
Am-iin, 4.eX,, June 11.—Gov.
' Cuberson received a telegram
from General Manager Polk, of
: the Santa Fe r<>a»l informing
him that the tliimigh train car
rying mail and express had been
held up last night near Coleman
and robbed ; that the fireman
hud been badly wounded by
robbers and asking lor state
rangers to pursue the bandits.
. 'The governor answered that
there were ao rangers in the in
terior of the state at this time,
all doing Mexican border duty
’ and that the local authorities
would h ive to look after the
matter. .Nothing* further could
be learned about the robbery
from the capital officials, but
from other sources it was learned
that the hold up was well plann
ed and executed.
The place where the trian
was robbed is very lonely and
isolated to that degree that it
afforded safety to the robbers
and left the train crew and pas
sengers almost at the mercy of
the bandits.
It is said that considerable
money was taken from the pas
sengers. The express car was en
tered, but there are conflicting
statements here as to whether
there was any money secured or
not, one story is that several
thousand dollars were taken and
! the other that only a small
' amount was secured but it is
generally believed that the ban
dits got some money from the
car.
The firemen offered resistance
to the bandits ana one of them
fired at him wounding him fatally
it i« reared.
In is known that while consid
iderab e money was secured none
of the passengers wire hurt and
the firemen was the only mem
ber of the train crew ii jured.
