Success in naval warfare has
nothing of the highfalutingsen

no waving of swords and cheer
in<r of the men, no preparation
Heading the boarders and
thus driving the enemy from his

higher mathematics as to how
theg uns shall be trained to
strike the enemy’s ship so far
distant that the men upon her
are undistinguishable even with
marine glasses. It is, we say,
the gray brain tissue highly de
veloped and properly organized
which wins the victory.

Considering the profits earned
by the telephone companies,
they could readily pay the war
tax levied upon messages ami
still declare large dividends.
Should they add the amount of
tax to the cost of messages sent
it would be an imputation upon
their patriotism.

of the rapid fire variety —one
that in its metrical flow and sen

Had been down in Manilla Bay,
And Dewer bad been with jampson
And Sampson had been with Schley,
And they all had met each other

Japan granted a bounty to ex

Ihe original Japanese bounty
has now been abolished, and the
treasury order for the assess

Ihe Gainesville Female Col

by the supreme court to be at
the present time a source of
private profit and thereby sub

taxation, but owing to the fact
that A. W. \ <tn Hoose has a
lease ou it as a rental, and the
owners receiving an income
horn it, it is therefore subject
to taxation.

the barrister, in a voice of thun

Paddy scratched his head. •
Then, with a sly grin, he re
filled:
“Train horses for the angels,
perhaps.”
“And cheat them as they did
their fellow mortals?”
“Maybe so,” replied the
jockey, still unabashed .
“Ah, they would be prosecut

“Sorra a bit,” answered the
witness.
“And why?”
“Becaure they might search
