gig battle expected
ln a Few Days. Pickets Lines
are in Hailing Distance.
Tlie troops of the United
Suites and Spain are almost face
to face and less than 4 miles
apart. Tonight the picket lines
at certain points are within
hailing distance of the enemy.
It seems certain that the battle
of Santiago must come within
a week. The troops are all
ashore here and at Baiquiri,
with the exception of a few
scattered companies'that have
gone forward.
The supplies are sufficient to
enable the army to sustain a
week’s campaign at botli land
ing points. There is a continu
al procession of small boats
riding into the beach through
the pounding surf, and as one
week’s rations are already la tid
ed, it is believed the required
supplies will all be ashore by to
morrow. The landing of troops,
horses and supplies has been ex
traordinary. With only one
steam barge, and compel ed to
depend on treacherous small
boats. Gen. Snafter has landed
over 16,000 men, hundreds of
horses and mules, and thousands
of dollars'worth of supplies,and
only two men have lost the'"
lives. No more than fifty ni
Dials have been drowned, ;nd
scarcely a package of supp es
has been lost. The officers ; en
erally are surprised at the tn all
loss of life and property.
Gen. Shafter said to a corres
pondent of tl.e Associated Press
today: ‘ 1 am well satisfied with
the progress- that is being made.
The disembarkation is slow, but
considering the limited facilities
and the exposed nature of the
landing places, the men have
done well. 1 only await the
landing of sufficient supplies to
begin the movement on Santia
go.
