war department has received
the following dipatch from Gen.
Miles:
“Port Ponce, Porto Rico, via
St. Thomas, July 29.—Secretary
War, Washington.—On the 20th
Garretson’s brigade had a spir
ited engagement on skirmish.
Our casualties four wounded,
all doing well Spanish Joss three
killed, thirteen wounded Yauco
occupied yest "day. IT uu-v’s

ing Commander Davis, of the
Dixie, moved into this pot, fol
lowed by Capt Il’ggiu-cn with
his fleer early this morning.

The Spanish retreat from this
