The few Romans who failed

The summer wanes and the

Perhaps it’s because of his

that the professional auctioneer
can never get a situation as a

While many of the men-of
war are to be mustered out of
service, it’s safe to say that
popular demand will force the
retention of the cable cutter —

With yachts and merchant

MILLIONS GIVEN AWAY.
It is certainly gratifying to
the public to know of one con
cern in the land who are not
afraid to be generous to the
needy ami suffering. The pro
prietors of Dr. King’s New Dis
covery for Consumption, Coughs
and Colds, have given away
over ten million trial bottles of
this great medicine ; and have
the satisfaction of knowing it
has absolutely cured thousands
of hopeless cases. Asthma, Bron

eases of the Throat Chest and 1
Lungs are surely cured by it. 1

that the senator has made a

. “Indefatigueable” is good—
we are pleased to note, however,
that the Herald continues to be
too truthful to say that the sen
ator has been consistent in his
recent “military career.”
Secretai y Alger complains that
he had much to contend with in
supervising the work of his de

i also the reason, says the Phila

Alger should have been displac

capacity. For great tasks only

England’s purchase of 70,000
tons of coal at Newport News,

while, howevei, to remember, in.
the craze to ge coaling stations
around the globe, that we are
something of a coaling statvon
ourselves, and have not as yet
fairly begun to develop our ca
pacity in that line.
The regular republicans of
New York now think that Col.
Roosevelt would get ths nomina

agree to the terms proposed by
Senator Platt. / But it would be
just like the Rough Rider to
capture the convention with a
whirl without bothering over the
preliminary of signing anybody’s
proctocol.
From conservative Boston
comes the suggestion, printed in

with the requisite change in the
constitution Miss Helen Gould

she could get there on the
strength of her war record.

THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
, simplicity of the combination, but also
I to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the Califoknia Fig Syrup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true ami original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fig Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist, one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other par
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fig Syrup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken

nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of

The use of the surgeon’s knife is be

where the destroyer had held full sway.

The returns fiom a clipping
bureau just now would not

He is being criticised not
simply at the South, but at the
North and bv conservative Re
publican papers. Here is a
sample of many, from the Bos
ton Transcript:
“The political uses in which
the high office of head of the
war department has been pros
tituted, the inefficiency and ex
travagance ot the conduct of the
war in some of its phases, capped
by the charge, now freely made
hero, that the secretary garbled
the Roosevelt letter and omitted
explanatory passages for the
sake of making a theatrical use
of it. will leave Mr. Alger in a
very uncomfortable position for
fooling the public, unless he
does what, it is said, the presi
dent and at least half the cabinet
have been hoping he would, and
take himself out of service by
resignation.”
Just think what an appetite
for breakfast a man has left as

in his morning paper. And un
happily for Secretary Alger he
knows he deserves it. Augusta
