Washingttn, I). C , Aug 25.—1 n
the forthcoming anual report ot
Commißoioner of Pensions Evans
it will he shown that on June 30,
897,.there were on the rolls of the
Pension Bureau 976 014 pensioners
to this must be added 6851 original
claims grant'd, but not recorded
and 762 restorations, which were,
nui entered nt the timj on th'
books
Commiss'oner Evans granted
63,648 original claims during the
past year and restored 4089 pen
sioners to the benefits of pensions
The p nsioners now aggngate 1,-
040,356
More pensions were granted last
year than any time from 1869 up
tn 1880.
There is absolutely no means of
even approximating what th
c aims will be under the recent
war, The Pension Office has done
nothing with the ciaims that have
been tiled up to this time.'l hey do
not aggregate a hundred, and for
the most part are claims of widows
and next of kin for the soldier
boys who tell before Santiago.
Before a claim can be perfected
it. must contain the full record of
the soldier’s service, and this in
formation has not yet be°n com
piled by the War Department.
When this is done ths claims will
be speedily taken up.
Ihe majority of claims will be
for wounds and sickness, the latter
leaving the soldier more or less
disabled*
No additional legislation will be
required to deal with the cases
arising from this war. The present
laws, the authorities say, cover all
that is necessary, and claims will
bi adjudicated on the same lines
as those ot the Rebellion.

Pittsburg, Pa., August 25—It is
believed that Dewwy’s victories at
Manila will reduce the price of
rope and cordage over 50 per cent,
h y releasing thousands of bales of
lemp which have been lying at
Manila, destined for New York,
oMon and Philadelphia. Oil op
orators who purchase cordage hare
will reap benefits from the vic
tories, although it will probably*
he six months before the new
stock is received in this country.
