LOC4I HAPPENINGS.
County Commissioners. —The
board of commissioners of roads
and revenue of Floyd county,
has been in session all day mak
ing a final settlement of the
county’s business with Tax Col
lector Sanford.
Next Sunday.—Madam Hu
mor has it that one of East
Rome’s fairest little ladies and
a prominent young business man
of Rome, will launch their crafts
on the sea of matrimony next
Sunday. May their South-ward
sail be a happy one,
In Pol’CE Circles —The
Rome officers report “business
very quiet” among the denizens
who dwell on the seamy side.
Since the war broke out, and
especially since so many of the
meanest negroes have enlisted
in the army, the police have not
been so busy as they were in
>ther day*.
Baseball Thim Aftbrnoon
Quite an interesting game of
baseball will be played at the
Expo ition park diamond this
ifternoon. The game will be
between the “Has Beens” and
the “Is Nows” and will be for
blood. A large crowd will doubt
less attend and it goes without
saying that everybody will have
a good time —except the um
pire.
The Rivers.—The swolen
rivers remain swolen Last night
they fell only about a foot and
from daylight this morning un
til the noon hour they remained
at the 20ft mark on tne guage,
not falling an inch. This pecu
liar behavior of these murky
streams is doubtless due to
steady rains up stream. In th e
meantime much corn and cotton
rem mas in seate.
R me Gets Them —Mr John
Cheney, a bright latentod young
attorney who has boon spending a
few days hears, returned to Mariet
ta. Un September 15th Mr. Cheney
will remove to Rome and hang out
his shingle. Later W. T. Kelley, of
Monticello, will come to Rom°

Quiet at Court House.—At
the court house today the quiet
ude that pervaded the atmos
phere was dense. The Sheriff’s
office afforded no news, while
the ordinary’s and clerks offices
were uo better. The tax as
sessors office is closed. In the
tax collector’s office Mr.
Sanford was quite busily en
gaged in the intricate details of
a final settlement with the
county commissioners.
