Pater Hammerli, keeper of a saloon
at Miltonvale, was lodge 1 in jail
here today, charged with an as
sault to murder B, F. Miller, edi
tor of the Miltonvale Press. The
affair is the result of an attempt
by the church people of Milton
vale to regulate the morals of their
community by hereic measur
es .
They started to rid the town of
saloons. They first assaulted Joe
Benoit’s place, whore they smash
ed everything. Peter Hammerli’s
place was next attacked. The doors
being locked, they were broken
. down with axes, whereupon the
mob of good people were fired up*
on from within the saloon.
Ons bullet struck Editor Miller
in the face, wounding him badly.
After the shooting Hammerli es
caped, but was arrested later and
brought here. When the saloon
keeper and his gunshad been cap
tured the church people finished
their work by demolishing every
thing in the place.
