tention of convening an assembly
of the Filipinos on September 15th
in order to decide upon the policy
to tie adopted by the insurgents.
The correspondent here of the
Associated Press has had an in
terview with Agi inaldo.
The insurgent leader pointed
out the whole population on the
Philippine islands was willing to
fight fur their independence.
Continuing, Aguinaldo said he
had 9,000 military prisoners, in
cluding 5 000 in the vicinity ot
Manila, besides civil prisoners.
Later, Aguinaldo said the “pro*
visional government” was now
operating twenty-eight provinces.
He asserted thnt on August 2d
they elected delegates in numbers
proportionate to the population.
As to the Americans, Aguinaldo
remarked that he considered
them as brothers and that “the
two sovereign republics were
allied against a common enemy.”
When questioned as to whether
the future Filipino policy would
be abso’ute independence Agum
aldoexcused himself from reply
ing, and asked what America
intends to do.
Anguinaldn continued:
“We have been fighting for in
dependence for a long time. The
natives who profesr to favor an
nexation are insincere. Is is mere
ly a ruse to ascertain my view.”
Asked if the Filipinos would ob
ect to the American retaining »
coaling station if recognizing the
independence of the island* or es
tablished a temporary protectorate
over them, Aguinaldo again refus
ed to answer.
Pending the conclusion of the
assembly. Aguinaldo said, he was
confident there would be no trouble
between America aud the Filip
inos.
The insurgent leader denied hav
ing received a request from Gener
al Otis and Rear Admiral Dewey
to withdraw his troops to a pre
scribed distance from Minila and
Cavite, and ha declined to discuss
the effect of such a request.
Aguinaldo further asserted that
le had never conferred with the
American authoritives since the
capitulation of Manila, and that
le had never authorized the insur
gents to search or disarm Ameri
can crossing the lines.
