ENGINEER B. £ HRLL
Measured the Rivers Yesterday ’ (
Old Fjoyd County Boy. p
Mr. Ben M. Hall, senior
member of the firm of Hall ■
Brothers, civil and mining
engineers of Atlanta, was in the
itv yesterday lor the purpose*of
measuring the discharge volumn
of Rome’s rivers.
Engineer Hall has charge of
the hydraulic stations of the
rivers of the states of Georgia,
Tennessee, Florida and Alaba
ma.
Rome is to be made a perma
nent station of observation and
measurements, and Mr. W. M.
Towers, who for so many years
has kept a record of the rivers,
rainfall and the temperature
here, will be placed in charge.
Mr.ll all has been in the service
of the hydrographic division
of the United States geological
survey for a number of years.
Just now Mr. F. H. Newell, of
Washington, D. C., is chief of
the hydrographic department.
The stations on the Oostanau
la are at Carters’ and at Re
saca. On the Etowah there is a
regular station at Canton.
Heretofore the government
has only had a guage a‘. Rome.
Now, however, a regular station
is established here and from
now on a close record will be I
kept daily of the volumn ol
discharge of the Oostanaulaand
Etowah.
Jbese figures will be combin-
river. The fact that the two
rivers interfere with each other
from time to time, makes it im
possible for a station keeper to
record either the Etowah or
Oostanaula correctly.
The next station below Rome
on the Coosa is at Riverside,
where the A. G. S. has a brid’ge
The measurements with a
daily record covering a period
of years will prove valuable data
for generations to come.
With such data, showing the
volumn of water in the streams
averaged for seasons and for
years, especially on that mag
nificent water power stream,
the turbid,the treacherous, the
tawny —the undamed Etowah,
the capitalist can take the water
fall safely reckon on so much
volumn of water and figure to a
nicety on the profits of invest
investing in water power.
B. M. Hall is recognized as
one ot the leading civil and
