SCAIP no more TICKETS.
Murray Escapes Severe Punish
ment-
The sentencing yesterday at
May’s Landing, N, J , of Steph
en Murray, of Atlantic City, for
scalping railroad tickets, is an
other instance of the inexora
bleness of Jersey justice, and the
futility of hoping to tamper with
railroad tickets with impunity.
On the evening of August sth
Murray was arrested in Atlantic
City for scalping Pennsylvania
and other railroad tickets. He
He plead “not guilty” but was
committed to jai lin default of
SBOO bail.
He was brought into court
yesterday under four distinct
indictments, and unexpectedly
pleaded guilty under all. He
was sentenced under one indict
ment to imprisonment for 60
days from the date of his incar
ceration, and to pay a fine of
$20.00 and costs. He also prom
ised to leave the state and nevei
to engage in ticket scalping
again. The other three indict
ments are held over his head as
a further insurance of good
conduct.
The prosecution of this case
was founded on information
furnished by the Pennsylvania
Railroad company. This compa
ny has been instrumental in
bringing other violators of the
ticket scalping law to justice,
owing to the deceptions practic
ed on their patrons, and the an
noyances and inconveniences
which they are consequently put
to.
The practice of scalping rail
road tickets is a nefarious one,
and it is to be hoped that the
Pennsylvania railroad will con
tinue its good work until the in
sidious and palpable evil is en
tirely eradicated. —Philadelphia

Lawless Characters Eu Route
to Jerusalem
IS |W'l' THE ONLY ONE.
His Life wjll be Protected by
Police Everywhere.
Berlin, Oct. 11. —All the
practical arrangements and con
nections of Emperor William’s
trip to Jerusalem will be con
ducted by a special agent from
Cook’s tourist office. It was
originally the intention of the
Emperor to plan and direct his
route himself, but it was point
ed out that there were treacher
ous roads that inexperienced
travelers had learned to avoid
and he was finally persuaded to
submit to Cook’s guidance. Em
peror William will travel with
a retinue of some 100 persons.
After leaving the royal yacht
in the Mediterranean the party
will travel by train with soldiers
guarding the road at all points.
The first stop will be at Con
stantinople, where a magnificent
reception will be held. It is said
the Emperor has set his heart
on visiting the tomb of Abra
ham there ;
The tomb is sacred to the Mo
hammedans and no Christian
has ever crossed the threshold,
except the Prince of Wales. If
the Emperor would emulate the
Prince he must beg the Sultan
for a special permit.
Many lawless characters are
reported as journeying to Jeru
salem in anticipation of Iraper
or William’s visit. In all the
countries through which the
Emperor will pass the police
aie taking every precaution to
prevent an attempt upon his
life,

NEGROES AND STRIKERS
Armed Miners go to Meet the
Negroes
Springfield, 111., Oct. 11, —
The mining situation at Virden
is threatening. Gov. Tanner’s
refusal yesterday to comply with
the demands of the coal compa
ny for military protection for
their non-union miners encour
aged the strikers greatly.
Late last night word came
to Springfield that imported
negroes were on their way
to Virden, and scouts hur
ried among the homes of the
union men here.
At 2 o’clock this morning 200
men, were picked, and shortly
thereafter they left for Virden
for the purpose of intercepting
and turning back the colored
miners. The union men are de
termined and swear no imported
laborers shall go within the
Virden limits and go unharmed.
Up to 10 o’clock this morning
nothing had been heard from
Virden.
