commission today are to the ef—
feet that the Spanish evacuation
of Puerto Principe will take
place earlier than the 220 d, and
that it will be desirable to send
the troops designated in the or
der issued yesterlay as early as
the 15th.
The transport Chester prob
ably will sail from Savannah on
the Sth with the Fifth infantry,
which is to go to the town of
Puerto Principe.
The Third Georgia and the
Eighth cavalry will follow soon
afterwards.

Elberton, Ga Nov. s.—This
morning about half-past 3 o'clock
fire broke out in a negro barber
shop on side of the pub

J. B. Vaughn, totally consuming
it From there the flames reached
to a dwelling belonging to Mrs
Bristol and consumed it. By hero
ic efforts tha adjoining buildings
were saved.
All of the burned buildings be
longed to Mrs. Bristol and were a
total loss 1 save an insurance of
SBOO on the hotel. The property
is very valuable and will be rebuilt
at an early date. The origin is
supposed to have from a
stove iu the barber shop. All the
household goods were saved.

Pine Grove last evening Miner
Wilson shot and instantly killed
his neighbor, Dillard Lutes. The
latter was drunk and repeatedly
threatened Wilson’s life. The Cor
oner’s inquest resulted in a ver
dict of self -defense

Wilson’s Minstrels Coming.
—The anrouncement that Geo.
Wilson, by many esteemed the
prince of minstrels, is coming to
Rome on next Wednesday, has
met with the approbation of
theatre-goers. Wilson’s minstrel
is said to be superb this season,

Etowah Pussums. —A number of
couples of youeg Romans went up

Moved to Priors —Mr. Hiram
J. Mills and family, of Rome,
have moved to Prior’s station,
south of Rome, Mr. Mills will
go into business at that point,
and’wiil act as postmaster. The
family will occupy the residence
lately vacated by Mr. Mack
Marsh, and his daughters, who
are quite intelligent and experi
enced teachers, will conduct a
winter school. They will prove a
desirable acquisition to that ex
cellent community.
Both Divorced, —Some days
ago a total decree of divorce was
granted Mrs. LaGrange Cothran
from her husband James E.
Cothran. The decree was grant
ed in Texas, where Mr. Cothran
now resides and absolves both
of them from the marriage vow.
Mrs Cothran is allowed the
children. She lives in Rome
now. She was formerly Mita
Robeson, and is a sister of Mr?.
J. C. Harris.

Charles H. Smith, of Rurae, Ga ,
grandson of the famous hujnor
is-t “Bill Arp,” is [promoted
to the rank of captain in his
regiment, the Third United

camp at Lexington, Ky. He is
in command of company E, of
which he has teen virtually the
captain since it was mustered
into the service. Capt. Smith
won his promotion by splendid
services and the manifestation
of exceptional military abilities.
