From tlii» morning’s Consti
tution the Hustler-Com mercici
reproduces the following para
graphs, which will be of interest
to many Romans:
Representative J, Lindsay
Johnson, of Rome,- entertained
theFleyd county delegation at
an Informal dinner last night.
XXX
Capt, J. W. Cain, whose term
as chief clerk of the seeietary of
state’s cflice will expire on Jan
uary Ist, liasmsde many friends
during his afficial stay in Atlan
ta, and he will be missed at the
Capitol. He goes back ro his
home in Summerville tu resume
charge of his newspaper there
and of politics generally in
Chattooga county.
XXX
Colonel Phil G. Byrd, of
Rome, so it is said, will be the
next assistant adjutant general
of the state, and he will probab
ly take his office about January
Ist, should it be found that the
legislature has left enough of
the military fund to pay him a
salary. Col. Byrd is the proprie
tor of The Rome Hustler Com
mercial, and has made that pa
per a factor in state polities
since he took hold of it. He has
been on the governor’s staff for
some years ;is well up in mili-
tary matters, and thoroughly
competent to discharge the du
ties of the oiice. No other ap
pointment that could be made
by Governor Candler would be
more generally approved than
that of Col. Byrd.
XXX
Tne tax commiasioß, appoiat
ed under the Ellis resolution,
will be called tegether for or
ganize tion during the first
week of January, and will get
jto work immediately. It is com
posed of the following :
Members ex-Officio —The gov
ernor, the comptroller general,
the attorney general, the ‘presi
dent of the senate and tLe speak
er es the house.
On the Part of the ileaate—
Messrs. Wight of Dougherty;
Fouche, of ■’Floyd, and Blalock,
of Fayette.
On the Part of the House —
Messrs. Elds, of Bibb ; Frees© an,
of Coweta, Blaleck, of Fayette ;
Johnson, of Bartow, and Hard
wick, ©f Washington.
It is an untisualiy strong tom
mission, and adder the terms
of the reselution creating it the
j members are given full pewer
. and plenty of time to go to tlie
. j bottom of the investigation be-
J fore them. Just how they will
preceed is uncertain, and the
preliminary meeting is to be
called only for the purpose of
discussing ways and means. One
of the first ©tops, however, will
I be to stud for the tax laws of
every ether state in the Union,
and to ascertain the results of
their operation during th© peri
od of Georgia’s unhappy experi
-1 ence. One of the larger commit
tee rooms at the oapitol will be
’ ! fitted up for their use and occu
pation while in session.
