San Francisco, Dec. 22.—The
prosecution in the case of Mrs.
Cordelia Botkin, charged with
the murder of Mrs. John 1’
Dunning, and her sister, Mrs
Deane, dos'd its case today.
John I’. Dunning, who has
boon in charge of the sheriff fcr
two days for refusing to answer
certain pointed questions put to
him by ths defense, was released
troin custody, the attorney for
the defense withdrawing the
objectionable question. Mr. Dun
ning was the principal witness
today.
lie was hauled over the coals
by the attorneys for the defense
who persisted in trying to intro
duce every disgusting detail of
the case in spite of the protests
of the witness, who clothed his
language as well as circum
stances would permit, but leav
ing no one in doubt as to its
meaning, nevertheless the Bot
kin attorneys persisted in asking
pointed questions and insisted
on answers being given in abso

expert, was the first witness
Mis testimony was necessarily
of an expert nature, and showed
almost conclusively that Mrs
Botkin was the writer of th
aaonymous letters, the addres
ses of i,he candy box and tha
writer of the note sent with the
candy. Dunning’s testimony re
ferred to the letters he had re
ceived and written from and to
Mrs. Botkin after he left San
Francisco for Cuba, where he
was a newspaper man in the
field.

that Mrs. Botkin was the first

exonerated Mrs. Corbeiliy and
Mrs. Calimberg of any' wrong
doing in the case and told of
their friendly acts to him and
his family.
Theodore Kytka, another wri

practically the same testimony
as his fellows, Ames and Fisen

open tomorrow. •

was notified and upen entering
and demanding to know
why Viner was there, that indi

made a dive for the citizen.
Viner was prom, tly knocked
down and dragged to the street
and turned over to the police.
Recorder Eubanks fined him
$15.00 or 30 days.
