DONT WANT ATKINSON.
A few Reasons “why” he Wort
Suit the Third Party People.
The GreeusLoro H<?rald-Journal
says in commenting on Hon. W.
Y. Atkinson’s recent address in its
county:
“We talked with several Popu
lists after the speaking, and found
a diversity of as to their
preference, if they had to accept
either Mr. Atkinsup or the Gener
al. Some declared Mr. Atkinson
had been too bitter and had work
ed too hard (leavinghis legislate e
duties, for which he was receiving
pay) to defeat Mr, Watson in the
10th, for them ever to become re
conciled to him. Others favored
Mr Atkinson, believing him mon
in sympathy with the needs of thi.
common people and that they han
enough of “General*’* in Senatoi
Gordov, who made a good soldier
but who was a failure as a states
man. It is evident, howerer, that
the Populist in Green county pre
fer making a straight fight, and
neither Mr. Atkinson nor Genera
Evans can draw from their ranks.“
There are three signifincant facts
c mtaiued in this paragraph:
1 Mr. Atkinson went to the Tenth
district and helped defeat Tom Wat
son.
2 Evans Populists concede that
Atkinson is in sympathy with the
needs of the common people.
3 The Populists will make a fight
of their own, irrespective of the nomi
ination the Democrats may make.
This is a complete answer to the
claim made by the supporters of Gen.
eral Evans that he can do mu h t
bring the Populists back into the
fold. We think it matters little whom
we noninate, so far as the amount o f
their support to the Democratic nomi
nee is concerned. Certainly, of thost
wb» do support the nominee, as mam
will be attracted to Atkinson by thi
closeness of Lis touch to the needs of
the common people, as will go to
General Evans for tne simple reason
that he had an illustrinue war record
—Ledger.
FOR ALDERMAN.
I hereby announce myself a
candidate for alderman from th>
Fifth Ward of the city of Rom<>
If. elected I pledge myself to dis
charge my duties to the best of my
ability, irrespective of p-irti
favoritism or nationality, with
equeal rights to all, and special
favors to none. I j r >mise you t><
abofe and ask you to vote for me
If it should be insisted that I was
not born in Georgia, I will say in
reply that it was not my fault. If J
could have bad my choice, I would
have been boru iu Georgia. Never
thelers, lam here with you as a
matter of choice. Let Rome rise o
fall, I am with her, All that I have
is hers. Whatever is her destiny
i mine.
L. Lytle.
A STARTLING PLATFORM.
Editor Hustler of Rome:
The following is a platform for
economy :
1. Let the clerk be clerk and
treasurer, salary' per year SI,OOO.
2. Let the mayor be mayor and
recorder, salary SSOO.
3. Reduce the policemen’s salary
per mouth to $45
4. Curtail the police force two
less than present number.
5. Reduce cmncilmen in pro
portion to the above scale and all
other officials of the city likewise
6. Let the contracts out to the
lowest responsible bidder.
7. We favor a reduction of the
street tax to $2 00. Where money
can't be paid I favor three days
m lieu of 15 days as it now stands.
8. We think the fire companies
expenses ought to be reduced,
L. Lytle.
Mr, LYTLE S CARD
Mr. Editor:—Please allow me
space in your paper to say to the
public and especially the voting pub
lic of Rome that my plan to reduce
the city's expense, in the Fire de
partment is, not to reduce the salaries
of the drivers aud their helpers, but
to cut off the list of the various com
pai ies. reducing each company,s rnenr
bership to 25 able bodied men.
L. Lytle.
OUT OF THE FIELD.
Owing to pressing business, I
have decided to withdraw from
the race for aiderman from the
Fourth Ward, thanking my friends
for their support.
