If Lol Wl Y. Atkinson gained
6 |ri.gb in otb<r parts of the
slate iu th** sanjo ratio that hw
ponn’aritv increased here since the
s ‘ • u nauittee and the fixing of
thP hint debate programme last
Saturday. Gen. Clement A- Evans
bad Metier return to his ministeri
al duties while he may; he had
better take the advice es hie friend
jj. White es Rockdale county and
retire from politics.
Gen. Evans is himself wearing
that worried look which his chos
en I’rituds took with them when
they went to meet the Atkinson
committee to fixup th* joint dis
cussion. He is not only on th* <!•
feneive in consequence of the back
down from the j >iut debate, but
as one of his most ardent support
ers put it, he is actually on the
ru i.
Since Saturday’s eveut there
has b r 'n more political talk than
at any other time since the an
Bouucemeuts of Ihe two candi
dates.
The contest in the meeting of the
slate committee over the setting ot
the date for the convention, in which
the Evans side was fairly whipped
out, after the line bad been squarely
drawn, has furnished its full ehare of
significant talk, but the most inter
esting things caid frem an Atkinson
point 01 view are about the j int de
bate farce palmed off by Gen. Evans*
friends. The followers of tbe gallant
old num who fought bo bravely in
the troubles of 82 are sorely disap
pointed to see him show the white
leather ir a single hand combat on
the slump.
Wlif n Colonel Atkinson invited Gen
Evans to a joint discussion before ttie
people he was particular to say that
the proposition contemplated a joint
canvass of the state, and' when this
invitation was accepted he fully ex
pected it to to fulfilled. General Ev
ans'fnAuds were satisfied that he
wci.iu bear himself well in meeting
Colonel Atsinson and were not pre-
P u ! i a backdown . Consequently
they are anything but elated at the
present state of affair#,

WEDNESDAY, IT WAS CHEEK
Yesterday It was Blood worth aud whu

Town is die ir.
Atlanta, Ga., March 9 —Mr.
Charles Wadsworth ended a drink
ing spree yesterday by killing him
eclf with morphine. He swallowed
the fata! diug yesterday morning
about 7 o’clock aud died last night
about thirteen hours after.
Mr. Wadsworth has liv'd in At
lanta many years and is extsmsivs
ly known here. He was twenty five
years old and married- He and hi#
wife lived at 119 Martin stmt
with Lia father, Mr. II B. W ado
worth, one of the oldest citizens ot
Atlanta, who is employed as clerk
in the Georgia railroad office. *
Y’oung Wadsworth has been
working at the freight office in the
sains capacity as hie father during
the months of this year and a few
days ago he drew his salary, aud
went on a spree. He had been a
drinker in his earlier years but re
cently has been quite temperate,
During his late spree he remained
away from home out of sight ot
bia parents and his .wife.
Nothing was seen of him by hie
relatives from tbe time he went
off until yesterday niornug a
7:30 o'clock when he walked into
the home of Ins sister, Mrs. W. H.
Peek, on Waddell street, just off
Edgewood avenue- He seemed to
have been drinking and told his
sister that li® had taken enough
morpheue to kil’ himself. Twice
before he had attempted to end hi.*
life, and his brother died in the
same way, and his sister knew a»
»uce what he said was true.
She sent to Dr. W. E Johnson, of
504 Decatur street, who when he ar
rived a few minutes later, found Mr.
Wadsworth uncoucious iu a deep
stupor produced by the drug. The
physician set to work indusirtous'y
to save th® young man, and for Lours
he worked patiently. Herbie reme
eies were tried but it soon became
apparent that the poison had obtain
ed too deep a hold *n the young man
to render his rescue from death pos
sible.
All the afternoon the young num
lingered, kind relatives watching; by
his bedside. Dr. Johnson had told
them that the young man could not
possibly revive, and without hope
they waited for the end.
Tbe young man disd about 8:30
o'clock last night. Coroner Paden
was notified and will hold an inquest
this morning
Young Wadsworth, as, stated is
widely known throughout the city.
He was a popular fellow and had
many lovable qualities, In business
he was competent and successful.
His greatest trouble was his weakness
for drink After taking one drink
he con d not resist a second, and
