TO LIGHT THE STREETS.
At the regular meeting of th«
city eouncil last Thursday night
the gas company made a proposi
tion to light the seventy-five posts
now on the streets at $1 65 per
pest per month, or fifty post, at
$1.75. The first proposition
amounts to $1,485, and the latter
to $1,050 per year,
This is a lower rate than has be
fore been offered the city, and the
council has the proposition under
consideration, but before taking
any action will try to obtain an
expression from the people as to
the amount they are willing to
spend for lighting the streets.
There io no question as to the
necessity for lighting the streets,
and tho only hitch is in the prjce.
The council will probably make*
counter proposition and it may be
that before .many moons the streets
will again be illuminated and the
night marshal can lay < aside his
“bull’s eye’’ lantern. —Cartersville

Dr.F. E. Crafton made a desper

to kill himself last night.
Desperately fighting liko a’mad
man, and .truggling with all the
fierceness of a wild animal, Dr.
Crafton succeeded in occupying
the attention of four ttout men
last night about 10 o’clock, while
he was euff-ring from the effects
of a large dose of Indian Hemp
taken with suicidal intent.
At 12 o’clock he wa. .till uncon
scious, but there was every indica
tiou that ho would recover and it
was the unanimous opinion of the
numerous doctors who were dilli
gently at werk trying to save
Crafiou’s life, that ka would pull
through,
When Dr. Crafton h.'b’iis >H’i

st.gg.iiug as if under a heavy load
He walked out Broad street to Hun

several gentlemen.
He began to call for his wife
and Hammond. For hi. wife he
seemed to have only the kindest

her leaving and begged her stay .
It was not long before Drs. Love
and Divine had Dr. Julian Thom
as, Br, J. S. Bennott, Dr. Kennedy
Dr. Head and Dr. Brown to help
them, and the work to resuscitate
the would-be suicide was kept up
without a pause. An attempt was
made to give him coffee through a
rubber tube, but he evidently
knew what they were trying to do,
fit ho bit it parts in sev

Lying on the flpor, half-undress
od and apparently unconscious
and about to expile overy mo
ment, Dr. Crafton made a sad and
pitiful sight. The ambulance was
called, and tho dootor was removed
to the Grady hospital about 11
o’clock, At midnight ho wa. far
from being a well man, but the
physician, were hopeful of his re

BEFORE THE ATTEMPT.
Report came to police headquar

attacked, cursed and beat her. He
went about like a raging lion,
threatening to kill hie wife, Robbio

matter.
Mrs. Crafton avowed her inten
