against J. J. Anderson, of Nashville,
a id Freeman Wright aad P. O Con

b.ibs a city official. The committee
investigati g the charges of bribery
found that no bribery was committ

conclusion that a conspiracy was
formed for that purpose but was not
earned out.
Wright first said that he had given
Anderson SI,OOO to influence the
vote of a member of thej board of
public works, John L, Kennedy. If
wu proved by every paity examined
that Kennedy knew nothing of it and
did not see the money, but the grand

SHERIFF AND DEPUTIES
PREVENT an angry mob from
LYNCHING TWO NEGROES.
Nashville, Tenn March 30. —
here was much excitement at
Springfield, Robertson countv
Wednesday night over the threat
of a mob to lynch Johnson Gaines
and Sam Edwards, two negroes
c mfiufd in the jail there. The mob
gathered in the town and was very
demonstrative, but as the sheriff
guarded the jail w th ten well
armed and resolute deputi eg, no
attack was made. It is probable,
however, that the effort to lynch
may be renewed. Gains and Ed
wards killed another negro named
Smith some time ago.
