1 hey Slumber, the River of
Death .oiling Between,
MURDERER AND VICTIM
THE TENMESEE COON PLANTED CN
THE NORTHEN BANK WHILE, JACK
CAMP S ON THE SOUTHERN SHORE
Jack Camp, the murdered deck
hand,was picked up yesterday at
noon by the Steamer Resaca, on
her up river voyage.
The float was found
against the Southern bank of the
Coosa, just three days after his
death, and just three miles below
the fatal spot, where, «n that
treacherous stream he was brained
and knocked from the Steamer.
The remains were face downward
and so badly bloated and decompos
ed that it was necessary to slip a
quilt under them, in the water, to
laud them.
Capt 4 Magruder had a grave dug
about 2Q feet from the water edge
and all that was left of J ack Camp
the mqrdered negros was laid to its
long rest.
About a half mile up stream , th P
steamer was again brought to
land, and this time to plant the
body of Sam Furnoy, the negro
murderer and suicide. The skat
had been discovered by Mr. Edgar
Harbour, a young planter who was
out fishing.
Furnoy’s remains were in equal
ly as bad a state otbloat and decom
position, and to get them into a
grave another quilt had to be
sacraficed.
Captain Magruda gave the re
mains of the victim and those of
the murder and sucidcd the most
decent burial as possible uuder the
circumstances.
He said to a Hustler of Rome
reporter the bodies were »o bloat
ed that a piano box would hardly
have covered either.

Chattanooga, Tenn., May o.
Charles Oscar Keller was an ex
ceedingly happy man on Monday,
for after four month incarceration
in the Hamilton County jail he
was released on making bond and
ended a pretty romance by wedding
Miss Zarelda Webb. The young
lady’s persevering efforts in his be
half had secured him liberty.
Kellar, was once a citizen
of Cincinnati, and whose colossal
frauds embrace two continents, he
being German by birth, was under
seven years sentence to the state’s
prison for embezzling $2,800 from
(he Chattanooga Brewing Compa
ny. He was arrested after years’ of
search in California and convicted
in January. His release was secur
ed on Monday on a bond pending
the motion for a supreme court
hearing.
The circuit grand jury of Ham
ilton county now sitting, today in
dicted him on another count for
the same offense, the brewing com
pany again appearing as com
plainant.
Kellor was arrested on a capias
and his fair bride of three day 8
went in search of new bondsmen.
Her efforts will be unavailing.
The young men are cordialy in
vited to attend the Gymnasium
Class at the Y. M. C. A. to- night
at 8 o’clock.
Col. Chas. N, Thompson of Pied
mont, Ala., was in the city a few
hours yesterday afternoon.
Men Burnett, an old Rome boy
now a Polk county farmer came in
today looking tanned and healthy.
Men says he is pulling a bell cord
over a hay burner and growing
healthy and strong.
Misses Emma and Lucy Wright
left today for Cedartown, where
they wiil visit, their uncle Col.

How W* Y. Atkinson Cap
tures Oid Douglass,
AND INCREASES HIS LEAD
The Atlanta Candidate Don’t Seem to
Be in it a Little bit. And yet We
Are told That Evans Will Carry
100 Counties,
Douglasville, Ga., May 9. —
The democrats of Douglas county
iu a mass meeting today, by a
vote of 121 to 74, elected delegates
to the gubernatorial convention,
and instructed them for Mr. Atkin
son. His personal friends in the
cc.uuty have been particularly ac
tive iu his behalf, this being in
the same senatorial district with
Mr. Atkinsons home county —
Coweta. Local influences were also
directed to him through the can
didacy of Dr. Whitely, of this
county, for the state senate.
United States District Attorney
Joe James was one of Mr. Atkin
son’s most pronounced supporters
iu the county, and, all things con
sidered, the result is just as was ex
pected. though had there been* a
primary election General Evans
would have carried the county two
to one.
Considerable complaint has al
ready been called forth by the
fact that today’s action was taken
in a mass meeting in which only
195 men participated, out of the
lull democratic strength of the
county.
. It is feared that this wiil be used
with the strong populist element
of the county in the regular elec
tion, and that the action of such
a slimly attended mass meeting
will have a generally bad effect
throughout the rank and file,
of the party iu the cownty,
Hon.Colombus Blair was nomina
ted for the house of representatives
Hon. J. s- James was made
chairman ot the Atkii son delegation,
and Hoe. W. T. Roberts was en
dorsed for solicitor general of the
L'a’lapoosa circuit, while de elates
were chosen for Dr. Whitely for the
senate. Atlants Constitution.
The above must be correct and
will doubtless be belived by the Ev
ans followers iu Rome -for “the
Constitution says so ’’
Os coursa,.it doesn’t look like Evans
was going to win those 100 coun
ties —but its nice for his followers to
talk about it, doncherno?
