PRETTY GIRLS AND FLOWERS
Shorter College in her Glory Las 1
Nijrht. A Dozen Diplomas and a Doz 1
en Relieved ant. Happy Hearts
The Medal Winners
The closing exercises of Shorter
College Commencement for the year,
is over, and the class of ’SH has dis
banded,disperse J,departed and gone
to its respective homes.
The closing scenes will never be
forgotten by the principal actors in
the beautiful drama, of actual life,
which was furnished by those who
participate in the brilliant fiscal years
work.
On account of the Sparks— Niel
wedding, which occured at the First
Baptist church at 8:30 last night,
College chapel was not so densely
packed when the first number of the
progam was called as it has been on
other nights this week The first num
ber on the program was called at 8;
30— a piano quartett rendered most
klassically by Misses’ Mamie Johnson
Marie Hazlehurst Alice Tucker and
Carrie Wagner.
Next a most Cevout priyer was
offered up by Dr. Battle of Virginia
The prayer was ofiered the audience
standing,
THE SYMPOSIUM .
Then came the Symposium, and
lovers of the beautiful were feasted
ou a perfect flow of eloquenc,
chaste and purse as the limpid
stream from a Blue Ridge foun
tain,
Miss Louise Lane, of Jackson,
ville, Ala., was the first of the
“Graduated Dozen of ’94” to rise
and utter an expression. She was
quickly followed by Miss Mamie
Leonard, of Viena, who surpised
the audience by saying she “did
not care for poetry much —but was
rather fond of it too.
Miss Willie Glover, of Hawkins
ville, was muchly shocked, in a
Symposium way’ at Miss Leonards
expression, and Miss Mary Ash
worth, of Rome agreed with Miss
Glover and expressed most beauti
fully her deep love for all things
poetic.
Miss Mary Eve, of Kingston, was
in the same boat, and her expres
sion of feeling a mind well cul
tured and deep of thought.
Mit-s Ivylyn Duggan of Rome
threw her well built and beautifully
clothed arguments with the “Lovers
of Poetry” and showed that poetry
held a high place in literature and
why it should—“ Poetry speaks to
the soul in a language that needs no
interpreter. ’
Miss Fannie Newsom, of Hephzi
bah, Ga. begged to differ—she
thought that we mortals should be
more practical, and failed to see how
poetry would keep the sifter going.
Miss Margurite Hoyt, of Rome, in a
sweetly modulated voice, expressed
her conviction. She thought of “Poe
ti'y as the hand made of Religion”
and was sure that the world and
the inhabitants thereof were the
better because of its sweet, refining,
yet mystersous influence.
Miss Pearl Duggan, of Rome,
made a pleasing statement backed
by strong argument. She had felt
the influence of poesy but. did not
begin to understand —every line
was filled with a hidden meaning,
a meaning which on its face was
pleasing, but when one sought to
penetrate the mystery hidden
within, the charm was broken and
the beauty lost—Perhaps this ac
counts for Byrons hatred of Hor
ace, whose beautiful lines he was
forced to analyse and parse while
in school.
Miss Mira Hill, of Uniontown,
Ala., differed with Miss Pearl, and
by reasoning and argument show
ed her to be on untenable ground,
in at least a part of her argument,
Miss'Sarah Smith, of Tennville.
Ga„ said that God filled the earth
with music to please the ear, and
poetry was music. It aiso served
to more healthy develope the im
agination of the mind and all
mortal kind were the better for it.
Miss Daisy Allen, of Rome, sug-
THE HUSTLER OF ROME. ThURESDAY JUNE 7, 1894
gested that poetry from all the
poets, formed too wide a field and
led the class into a discussion of
Tennyson, the Class poet.
Here at 9 o’clock, sharp, the
wedding guests began to arrive and
while the fair graduates repeated,
each her choice passage from Ten
nyson, the noise and hubbub of
the eager throng who wanted seat*,
played a very fine accompaniment
to the beautiful passages.
Finally the Symposium war
forced to suspend, and Dr. Battle
was appointed temporary receiver.
The Chapel was packed to its ut
most recess, and then the doors
closed in the faces of the hundred
who sought, but in vain, to secure
admission.
After many beautiful passages had
been repeated and discussed, the
class finally rose and in concert re
peated a beautiful poem to the mem
ory of Alfred and Martha Shorter,
after which they twined the garlands
o f beautiful flowers aiound the por
traits of the sainted couple whose
memory Romans will ever cherish
and keep green. This finished the
symposium.
Aller the class was seated, a piano
solo was rendered by Misses Mir.am
Reynolds and Alias Undine Lane.
Then followed the bachalaureate
address delivered by Dr. Henry W-
Battle, one of Virginia’s most pro
found scholars and gifted sons. Dr.
Battle’s address was well punctuated
with applause, and from “start to
finish,’’ he held tha closest attention
from the vast audience.
Then came the delivering by
President Battle, of Gold medals,
as follows ; Art course, two med
als, Miss Alice Boyd and Miss
Kate Perkins each of Rome.
Music: Miss Undine Lane cf
Jacksonville Ala.
Elocution Composition, member
of Graduating Class : Miss Louise

Hubbard, Drucilla Petts and Oli
via Harris.

ed Misses Lester and Jeffries, of

nesee.

Duggan then awarded to
