THE HUSTLER OF ROME. SUNDAY JUNE 24. 1894
RESISTED ARRESTED
A NEGRO MAN STANDS OFF BAILIFF
BEARD WITH A CLUB.
Yesterday morning Bailiff Beard
aceompauied by Mr. Win. Ennis,
the young Roman Barrister, went
over to East Rom', te arrest a ne
gro by ths name of Sam Shelton,
wanted for cheating and swindling.
Ou their arrival at the. negroes
house they found him standing in
the door with a club in his hand
aud on b»ing intormed by the of
ficers that they desired his com
pany to the county jail, he became
inuignaut and swore by the great
horn spoon that he would not go,
and furthermore that he “would
brain do fust one dat laid hands
on him.”
Bailiff Beard always on the al
ert, played a bluffiing game on the
koou by threatning to shoot him.’
In the mean time Major Enais ap
proched the koon by stealth, and
closed in on him. Then the fun
commenced in earnest, the uegro
began to buck, but the plucky
young disciple froze
on to him like grim death to a
dfad “nigger,’’ The combatants
were on a little verandah about
s«veu or eight feet high, and in the
ollie they both rolled off together
but as usual the lawyer was on
top, and by putting the iron foot
of the law on the negroes abdo
men he succeeded in knocking the
oreaih out of him, and before the
darkey could recover bailiff Beard
bad the bracelets on his wrists.
They then let him up and plac
ing him between them, brought
him to the country jail in triumph,
where he now languishes in de
feat.

Ankie delle Ga, June 22. 1894,
Dear Hustler, —
Lounging under the shade of
a. large spreading oak iomewha:
after the fashion of a Newfound
land, on a hot summer aftarnoon.
I am looking over a field of grow"
ing corn, and as the heat rises
from mother earth aud as it rip
ples ascend higher and higher me
think I hear the poping of the
newly made joints of corn.
Looking in another direction I
'ey the smoke rising from an en
gine and hear the familiar hum of
a threshing machine ;I see the men
busy in their respective places
about the machine, the wagon
moving the wheat towards tte
farmyard ;and when looking in an
other direction I s«e the plowman
pushing bin mule onward stiring
the soil before the young grass gels
a headway in the cotton.
This we®k has indeed been a busy
one with us-
Since the delightful rains of last
Sunday and Monday our farmeis

today, I have no doubt but that
