A POTATOJJUEL
The Rev. Mr. Bowman Accepted
the Challenge
NAMED THE WEAPONS.
He Fired six Shots at the Des
perado and hit him Every
S h ot Ta te rs a n d S pecta
tors Were too Much
for a Bully.
Cue way of combating an eviel
practice is to make it ridiculous.
It was by this means that dueling
was stopped in a certain district
of Kentucky some 40 years ago,
At that time a traveling preach
er named Bowman a strong mus
cular man was canducting a senes
of religious meetings in Kentucky.
At jne of them a well known des
perate character created a disturb
ance, and being publicly rebuked
by Bowman sent him a challenge
to fight.
The preacher’s first thought was
to treat the matter with silent con
tempt. Then he reflected that
dueling was all too . common in
that region, and he decided to ac
cept the challenge.
As the challenged party, Bowman
had the choice of weapons. He
selected a half bushel of large
Irish potatoes and stipulated that
his oppoent must stand 15 paces
distant, and that only one potato
at a time should be takt n from th*
measure.
The desperado was furious but
Bowman insisted uoon his rights
as the challenged party and threat
ened to denounce the fellow as a
coward if he made further objec
tions. Seeing no way out of the
scrapethe desperado at last con
sented .
The contest took place on the
outskirts of town, and almost ev
erybody in the place turn* d out to
see the fun. The seconds arranged
the two men in position, by the.
side of each being a half bushel
measrure filled with good sized po
tatoes.
Bowman threw the first one. it
struck his opponent in a central
spot and fell in pieces. A shout of
delight went up from the crowd
which flurried the desperado, and
his potato flew wide of the m, rk.
Bowman watched his ch nee,
and every time his opponent stoop
ed for a potato another one hit
him in the side, leavingja wet spot
on his clothes and then scattering
on all sides. The feliow was hit in
this way five times. Then the
sixth potato struck him in the
short ribs, and he lay on the grass
doubled up with pain and groan
ing, “Enough I”
The bystanders went wild with
delight, but Mr. Bowman looked
very sober. The desperado was ta
ken and put to bed, and there he
staid for more than a week, and
when he again appeared he was
greeted with so many jokes that
life was almost a burden to him.
That was the end of dueling in
that region.

Watson a Czar
Atlauta,Ga., Au g. 18.—The fine
Italian hand of Tom Watso ll
seems to have' opened a Pandora
box among the Populists of the
‘Seventh Congressional Distrot.
He is charged with foisting Dr.
Fqlkm’s no miration for Congress
bn the party, and some of the faith
ul are sorely wrought up. Reliable
information from the district is to
the effect that a majority of the
convention which nominated th'
doctor was for Mr.. McGarri jy, of
Paulding, but that a mandatory
etter tc th at gentleman from the
manager of Tom Watson’s paper
told him to utep down and out in
favor of Seab Wright, or Dr. Fel
ton.
His friends are as mad as wet
lens, ami they are characterizing
the resourceful Tommie as' the
“czar/’dictaftor.” etc. A thing that
the Pipulists cart forget is the
doctor’s Lite cyciorTic attacks on
the party he is to lead.
He is too fresh .from the camns
of the persecutors, they think for
lim to protect the jewel of consist
ency, when *'fool” Democrats be
gin to fire questions.
- They cannot m ike ' up their
minds, however, -hat the doctor is
in the race to stay, but tfiat he is
a sort of superanuaded stool pigeon
whom “ill-health” will retire at a
convenient time in the interest of
Seab Wright, whom Tom Watson
is anxious to see get along well.
