Bentonville Ark,, Sept. IW.
Buchannan, a wealthy farmer,
w hile intoxicated, went to the reei

stfropted to go in without ringing
the bell.
\( r - Rice aeked him what he
wanted, and receiving no reply
fired his shotgun. The contents

Buchannan’s f«ce, making a dan

Basebalh Next Week.
The Rome baseball club have
made arrangements to play Mari
etta three games sometime the
coining week, probably Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. The Ma
rietta’s consider'd one of the
strongest clubs in North Georgia
and the contest will be a livele
one. The Rome boys are in tine
trim, and will play winning ball.
Look out tor the flea plague.
One comes every five years, and
timesup, Mr- and Mrs. Hopper,
with all 'heir family, are due this
September, but many of their re
lations arrive in advance to tickle
up phlegmatic Bostonians.—
Boston Herald.
Mr. and Mrs. Hopper with their
family and a number of relatives,
have been summering with us,
and we are glad to know that they
will soon leave for Boston, where
they will create a stir by introduc
ing phlebotomy to the curriculum
of that city of culture and learn
ing.—Augusta News.
The little plutocrats seem to be
much worried because Hen. ’ J W
McGarity did rot accept the nomi
nation for Congress by the Populists
in this district.—Dallas Heiald.
Will our populistic frienu please
cite us to the eventful occasion, when
the pops tendered the nomination to
McGarity. Was it done in the dark
hours of the .uidnight caucus? #lf it
was then, and MeG irity refused the
nomination, then we can see how the
11 omened bird came to settle on the
king of political Hoppers. Dr. Felton
let the Herald publish the facts.
Our Democratic friends, the open
and avowed enenues of all honest
methods in politics, are terribly si ;■
ken up over the nomination of Dr.
1 elton for Congress by Populists of
this district. They realize, that the
Doetor knows how to get there and
they feel to a’ dead certainty that
he is going to Washington, vice
Judge Maddox.—Dallas Herald,
If Editor Botjenhamer is a truth
ful man and wants to serve his read
ers with reliable information he will
iculcate a little among the pops and
go back to his and write a
later report. Election day will
prove that populists will not take
I elton in theirs and that Felton won
-18 last victory years and years ago.

Grigg was arrested and would
undoubtedly have been lynched
by the enraged people had it not
been for Captain Phil Brown Uyo

The trouble arose from the fact
that for some time several of the
waiters have bsen guilty of inde

Mrs Te ry, who has charge of the
dairy.
The matter was reported to C-pt
Brown, who Jadvised that nothing

wanted to see him. Griggs turned
over in bed and fired nt Mr. Ove>-
street, the bullet striking him in the
abdomen and lodging in his liver,
Overstreet promptly returned tl.e
fire and the shooting bennme geralen
Griggs was shot in the side. JGriggs
after being wounded, attempted to
escape and made a dash through the
door. He was followed aud caught
in the woods near by.
Captain Brown was sent for and
when he arrived on the scene the
negro was on his knees praying for
mercy and was surrounded by men
with drawn revolvers.
Captain Browu begged the. > en
not to commit any rash act and ler
the prisoner be dealt with according
to law. They were persuaded and
the man was taken to Fincastle for
safe keeping.
Mr. Overstreet's wound is of a s:-r‘-

for his recovery.

Dead Japs Afloat
Shanghai, Sept. I.—. The Brit
ish gun-boat Redpole has sailed
from Chee-Foo for Port Arthur.
Junks arriving at Che-Foo from
New Chand report a large number
of bodies of Japanese are floating
in the water at the mouth of the
Tatlung river.
Fire started yesterday among
some hundred of flower boats,
which were moored stem to stern
in the Canton river, and nearly all
of the craft were destroyed.
The boats were moored in fleets
and those employed on them lived
on board. Hundreds jumped over
board and were drowned, while
still greater numbers were burned
to death. At least one thousand
persons perished.

Montgomery, Ala., Sept. 1. —It
is semiofficially announced here t
that the recent meeting of the j
Jeffersonians and populists at Bir

clans in this city on the eve of the
assembling of the legislature. The j
delegates will come provided with j
such proofs of fraud in the elee- .
tions as they can gather, and will
enter an exceedingly vigorous pro
test against the announcement of
the vote as returned. Captain f
Kolb said today that he had never 1
given the matter of making the
