WHITE CAPPERS.
Disgrace the Good eld County of

A White Haired old Man who

Madi-on, Ga , Sept. 14.—This
community is very much stirred
up over a white cap outrage that
occurred about eight miles from
this city last night. An old man,
Mark A. Cochran, was taken out
and beaten severely at midnight
by a band of masked men.
This is the only outrage of the
kind which has occured in the law
abiding, peace loving county of
Morgan in years, and the people
are very indignant over the affair.
Last week Mr Cochran, who is
about seventv years of age and
whose hair is snowy white was in
dicted by the graud ,ury for burn
ing Asburry Chandler's barn.
When arrested Mr Coshraii
promptly gave bond and when his
trial came on he was defended by
Calvin George. The trial resulted
in an acquittal there beingno posi
five evidence connecting him with
the burning.
It se*-ms that • number of th c cit
izeus of the neighborhood in which
Cochran lives decided to take
the law in their own hands. Last
night they called nim out. whip
ped him and ordered him £to leave
the county within ten days.
Mr. Cochran was in town today
and says he knows ever}’ one ot
the fifteen men wh j were in the
crowd. He says that every one is a
third party man.
“They may think to scare me, “
said he, “ but as I did not run from
thelaw,which I have alwuys respected
and obeyed, I shall not leave home at
their command, “He will prosecute
these men in the United states court.
Cochran has always borne a good
reputation in Morgin county, where
he has resided for vears. He is a dem
ocrat himself, and it may be that
there is some politics in the’affair.

ROME'S NEW INDUSTRY

The undeveloped resources of
this section of country contain un
told millions of wealth.
This forenoon a Hustler of Rome
reporter was shown some of the
most perfect specimens of grey buff
and bronze buff brick the markets
of the country afford.
And they were made right here
in Rome too. Mr. Hunter McClure
of the Rome Brick Co. says
that his company has just burn
ed 20,(XX) of these brick, and while
they were burned as an experi
ment, the results have been more
than the most sanquine of the
company had hoped for.
The brick are made from newly
discovered beds of clay found on
the Rome Brick Co’s property and
the brick burned are of the exact
color of those used in the great
Equitable building in Atlanta.
The beds of clay seem to be in ex
haustible and when it is known
that the Equitable building paid
$65 per thousand for the brick they
used and that the Rome Brick Co.
will put these Bronze or Gray-buff
brick on the market at S3O per
thousand then Romans may grasp
the situation.
Mr. McClure will leave in a few
days and will make a tour of all
Southern and Western cities in
troducing this new product from
the already famous brick yards of
the Rome Brick Company.
Rome is surrounded by a section
rich in mineral wealth, clays and
quarries, while fertile valleys and
matchless river bottoms make her
the city of the garden spot of
God’s country.
