Dalton, Ga., Sept. 15.—Perhaps
the largest and most enthusiastic
crowd ever gathered in this city
met in and around the courthouse
yesterday to listen to speeches
from “Our John” and Secretary
Hoke Smith.
The Citizens of Daltov did them
selves proud in the magnificent
banquet served at the big hotel
Dalton in honor of Sec'y Hoke
Smith, on Friday night. (See let
ter.)
Today the clans have gathered
and every county within 75 miles
of this city is well represented.
Hoke Smith is one of the big
gest men in the South—since hear
ing his masterly speech as 2 1-2
hours the above seems to be the
verdict of his audience. As for “Our
John” he made the best 1 1-2 hour
speech of his life, He is Whitfield’s
choice, first, last and all the time.
The colored draymen and trans
formen with Henry Sanford, went

A Thrilling Experience with a lot of

Mr. Haymond McConnell, Bail
iffs Bill McLeod, Henry Beard,
and J. D. Barker, of Cave Spring,
had a thrilling experence Friday
night, with a lot of negro gamb
lers out at the furnace.
They went out to New Rome,
to arrest Jane Dennis, Sip Stans
bury, and Buck Hayden, who were
wanted on different charges.
The Dennis, woman lives in one
of the lo- g row of houses that
stands in middle of the field near
the furnace. It is a four room
building, and the woman occupies
two rooms, and the other proved
to be a regular gambling den.
the officers slipped up to the
house and fp.v several negroes
play ing cards, mid money sc.siter
ed over lhe table.
Mi. McCooneli and B*»il;ff Mc-
Leod, enieied Hie bouse al differ
ent doors, while thentiiers remain
ed ou the outside. «.s they got in
the room the negroes made a des
perate effort to hide the money,
but McConnell mad Beard covered
tiiem with their pistols.
Young McConnell commenced;
To baud cuff a big negro named
Julius Rogers, and when he took
bold «>t Joe Campbell to put his
arm on the side Qt the cuff, Camp
bell made a swipe at the lamp to
extinguish it. Bui McLoed was too
quick tor turn and seized ihe light.
Campbell then made a break
for the door and legged it out across
the cotton patch like a grey hound
and succeeded in eluding the offi
cers for a while.
In the-excitement McLeod ran
out of the room with the lamp,
leaving young McConnell in the
dark, with live burly negroes.
Then Rogers gradually edged to
wards a window, and with a move
ment as quick as thought, dived
headlong through it, carrying glass
sash and all with him. Raymond
shot at the disappearing form, but
missed him. The negro fell full on
his head, five feet to the ground,
and immediately disappeared, ta
king with him a fine pair of hand
cuffs.
The funniest part of the whole
business, though, was the fact that
when the negro jumped through the
window, five silver dollars fell out
of his pocket, thus unintentionally
paying for the stolen bracelets.
Don Land, Rob Hooper, Henry
Denny, Julus Rogers, Joe Camp
bell and John Williams, were the
gamblers, and all but the two that
escaped were brought to the city
and jailed.
The officers took the blood-hounds
and returned to the furnace to see
if they could get the two others.
But the dogs could not strike the
trail. They came back through
the Fifth Ward and went to Camp
bells house, and found him in bed
sound asleep. He was brought
back to Rome and placed in jail.
Land and Hooper were only
holding stakes and yesterday turn
ed States evidence and were re
leased. The others were bound over
under SIOO bond for gaming.
The hand culls were the same
that brought Beresford from New
York and Beck from Texas. It
seems that they are gone this time,
however, for good and all.
It was a splendid piece of work,
bagging the lot, and only allow
ing one man to get away. The par
ties will not for get the experience
soon.

I'p to the fifth inning yester
day Roim had a dead cinch on
the last game with the Carters
ville Combination team. The
score then stood 10 to 1 for the
locals.
But in that fatal fight sky
rockets, Roman Candles, Buzz
wheels and everything else in the
fire works line went off. Just ten
of those Stewart Young visitors
clattered acrossjhe rubber and that
won the game.
But not a bit of discredit of that
inning should go to John Proctor,
who was pitching. Up to that time
Cartersville had secured but one
hit off of him, and his Ditching
was magnificent. The boys just
went to prices in the field and
ma le the rankest kind of errors.
The side should been retired with
only two runs.
The final score was 15 to 10 for
the visitors, and they went away
with two victories to their credit
Tom Berry umpired a fair and

satisfaction to every one.

Wm. C. Owens, from returns in

the district and won tne mostbril

That the fight has been a heated
one, would express it in its mildest
form. But through it all the major

when that disease has Breckenrigdg

The women of Kentuckey, God

in the beauty of their woman hood
have successfully 7 relegated the
white-haired libertine to the walks

standard of the morality of our
