HAS HE BEEN INDICTED.
“I Cannot Tell You,” was District-
Attorney Birney’s Reyly
Washing'ou, Sept. 17. —It was
reported here today that the Grand
Jury had found itidicments in thn
sugar case against Messrs. Hav
etneyer and Searles, of the Sugar
Trust, and Broker Seymour, of
New York, all of whom refused to I
answer questions propounded by .
the Senate Investigating Commit-1
tee.
The World correspondent- asked I
Uui’ed States District-Attorney I
Birney today if the report was true I
that the Gratjd Jury had acted up- |
on these casts. Hh replied: *1 ’
cannot tell you. I cant say that no
indictments have been returned.”
His answer does not preclude the
possibility that the indictments
h ve been found by the Grand Ju
ry, and common expectuiioa is
that they will be presented m ’the
criminal court some time next
week.
Correspondent Ewards and Bro
ker Chapman, when indicted on
similar charges awhile ago, came
f - om New York to Washington to
give bail, but it is said that in the
cases of Messrs Havemeyer.Searles
and Seymour bail may be accept
ed m New York.
