THE TENT MEETING.
Mr. “8” Appeals to all Christians
to Come out and Help.
In the hurry of the business and
theexc’ting scenes of the circus,
and other hurtful influences, the
Tent Meeting in tin* Fourth Ward,
has to some extent ben lost sight
of. But a goodly number gather
every night to worship God and
try to influence men and women to
lead a I etter life And whenever
this is accomplished, it is jurt so
much to make our city better.
It is passing strange therefore,
that any such meeting should no 1
receive the endorsement and co-op
eration of all good people. Preach
ing in a tent may not seem to some
to be the best means of reaching
those who need the gospel; person
ally, 1 would rather worship in the
■church, but it does reach and save
some who do fc not go to church
..{buildings) and it is this class we
ought to be the more anxious to
save, and 1 thing that true Chris
stainsought to be willing to make
sacrifice of their personal
preferences for the possible good of
«atheo*.
Again others give tent Service
the cold shout ler, because it is a
methodist affair,and possible some
methodist regard it us a lower
grade of worship than they can
afford to endorse or arteud.
■Of course no one would admit
this, er that they were prejudice
in any way,but action* some times
apeak loud -r than words, but the
object of this letter is to appeal to
al! who are interested in better
morals and in religion (not church
ism) to rally to this tent se vice:
it is jus\ it is right, and will iot

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Some Startling Figures Showing
Increased.
Is the English language destin.
, ed to become Hie UDvereal lan
guage? Three centuries ago it was
employed by less (ban 3,000,000 ot
people; today it is spoken by over
115,000,000 people in ail parts of
1 rhe globe, and is constantly iucreas
ing both as to population and ter
ritory.
At present it is distributed as
fo.lows .United States, 65,000,000;
British Islands, 38.900,000; Cana
da, exclusive of French Canadians.
4,000,000; West Indies, British
Guiana, etc. 1’500,000; Australasia
4,000,000; South Africa India,a nd
other colonies, 2.500,00 U.
This includes only those whose
mother tongue is English, no ac
count being taken of the vast num
her who speak English but who
another tongue. The increase of
English speakers is calculated to
be fully 2,000,000 annually.
No other language of modern
times has made such rapid prog
ress. Three hundred years ago the
3,000,000 people who spoke Eng
lish resided principally on the
British fsles. Now it is spoken
more or less in nearly every coun
try on the face of the
The principal languages which
competes with English, not consid
ering such as Chinese and Hindo
stanee, are French, Spanish, Rus
sian and German.
French is practically stationary
as regards the number of its adher
ents; Spanish is largely spoken in 1
South America and the southern
part of North America, but it owes
its prominence to the colonizing
genius of its speakers; where Ger
man is introduced it rapidly gives
way to the native tongue, general
ly English ; Russian, like the Ger
man, has little influence upon the
Western civilization.
It is a remarkable fact that
while the English in their colonies
and offshoots have absorbed mil
lions of aliens there is no record of
any great body of English speak
ers having become absorbed by
any other race.
In the United States there are
millions of Germans and other
foreigners who have become merg
ed with the English speakers in a
single generation, they losing even
their family names; and the chil
dren in many cases do not under
stand their parents’ language.
In Canada, however, the French
speaking population is increasing
faster than the English speaking.
This is not because the French
element absorbs the English, but
because it crowds it out. While
the French is seldom absorbed by
any other tongue, it is most always
absorbed by the English.
The Engli-h have practically
drive i tie French out of Egypt
and it is rapidly driving the Dutch
out of Africa. This has been ac
complished in Egypt within a doz
en years. The change in Africa is
being effected with even greater
rapidity.
As the English speaking settlers
rush into the new country, the
Dutch and other languages, which
are rarely to be met with, drop in
to the backwoods and are finally
lost.
Africa is witnessing a repetition
of the fight of the tongues in Amer
ica three centuries ago, which end
ed in a victory for the English. The
history of lingual developement in
America alone is a sufficient argu
ment for the prediction that no
languages, except possibly those of
the Orient, will long remain for
midable competitors oi the Eng
