An Imprudent Pastor.
Rev. John Pilkington is pastor
of the Winham Terrace Methodist
Episcopal church, Brooklyn, He is
an elderly gentleman, who up to a
few days ago was held in high re
spect by the parishmners of his
church, but it appears that he has
forfeited their regard by his mor
bi d curiosity and by his rapturous
and tropical indorsement of a fake
show.
The pastor had for co-boarders in
a hotel an itinerant show, the
managers of which were Prof, and
Mrs Baldwin.
They were mesmerists, theoso
phists and hypnotists, and occas
ionally gave zest to their lutares
with spectacular divertisement.
The good and, by Ike *o?', the
elderly divine was especially in
vited to be present at one of the
seances. He accepted, and for
his especial edification a change
was made in the program©
The particular piece de resistance
of the evening was a ekifS lance
where a young female jealously
endeavored to kick the roof off the
house, and varied her pedal and
bodily gyrations with other equal
ly outrageous acts.
The effort would have shocked
the most ordinary rounder, but
the senile preacher was so well
pleased with what he saw and what
was suggested that he wrote an un
ctuous and most laudatory espite
to the Baldwins, thanking them for
the voluptuous entertainment.
The letter got into print and
the women of the congregation
when they learned of it threw their
hands up in righteous indignaili/T;
and rolled their eyes in holy hor
ror, as the church holds attend
ance at a theater to be in violation ,
of church discipline, but when to
that is added ballet dancing ai d
skirt dancing why it is too awfully
awful for Christian contemplation. ,
That minister will either get down
on the penitential stool or leave
the church.
