Says Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, “are the
mile-stones whereby we measure our
progress through life.”
Do you want to be somebody? If you do,
there is no time to lose. This is the
<>f “Go!" The man who does not
know things will be as surely left in the race
as a horse who starts with a bucket of
water in his interior department. Your
friends will be sorry, but they can not stop
to wait for you. There is no middle course.

How to succeed—that is the great question.
The most important thing is to know
} what you want to do, and then do it well.
No half-measure.
Whatever your business, trade or
. profession, make yourself master of it.
No useful knowledge comes amiss. Studv
the practical part of your business first and
ornament your mind afterward. But you
' will say: I work hard; mv salaiy is small;
1 have no room r or money for a library
wherewith to educate myself, and no time
for lectures or lessons.
Now Listen:
If your room is only six feet by four and
your income the smallest, you can furnish
it with the best library in the wo- J at a cost
that will surprise you by its insignificance.
1 hat library consists of one wor‘- only.

human knowledge. It is a work worthy to be
your guide through life. It is the new'

Judge Thurston of Elmira Fell

the residence of his grar.daughter,

broke his neck.
Mr. Thurston was not a sound

bly for the purpose of selecting a
book from the library. At the head
of the stairs he tripped and fe'l to

The back of his head was bruis

“THE COLONEL.”
Great Musical Night at Nevins
Wednesday Sep. 26th.
The Colonel will he present at
Nevin’s Oper i House Wednesd y
September 25th. The play is au
adaptation from the German, full
of strikingly ludicrous situations
brought about by one Hummer, a
jolly old boy with a weakness for
kissing variety actresses. He en
deavors to hide his escapades from
his wife and particularly his
mothei-in-'.aw, of whom he stands
in mortal dread. The character of
the mother-in-law may be judged
from the fact that when her bus
band, Col. Griaalethrope, departed
this life his widow determined to
k-ep his military title in the fam
ily by assuming it herself. This
strong-minded female, to add *o
the gravity of the son-in-laws sit
uation, has a sen who is a rare
specimine of a dude with a weak
ness for mashing, iu which busi -
ness he often runs up against his
brother-in-law, and being worsted,
he satisfi s his jealous rage by
turning States evidence against
him to his mother and sister. Mr.
O-car P. Sisson, the eccentric com
median, assumes the part of Hum
in -r, the son-in-law, while the ti
tle role is played by Josephine
