Spring Creek, Floyd County
Gi., Oct. 25: Yesterday afternoon
about 3:30 o'clock, fire flashed out
of the hut room of County Com

Os the contents, and only by
heroic efforts on the part of Mr.
Clayton and those about the gin,
about one bale of seed cotton was
saved.
The loss will amount to not less
than |SOO and wili be total as Mr.
Clayton did not carry a dollar of
insurance.
The fire originated in the lint
room aud is supposed to have
caught from from a match, which
may have been fed into one of the
gins.

The Drought in North Georgia.
Adairsville. Ga., Oct. 25 —The
continued drought at this eud of
Georgia is causing a goodly amount
of distress. The wells and springs
are drying up ; the running streams
are very low and the ground has
lost all of its moisture. The land
cannot be prepared lor the grain
crops. The dust is causing people
aud stack, especially horses aud
mules, to sicken. There is nothing
needed so badly now as rain.

Floyd County’s proposed Baby
Bonds Cause a Sensation
OLNEY’S “TWO” OPINIONS
He “Went too far" with the
First and Carlisle rushed
Overand asked for “an
other" and got it—
Right now.
The following from the Cincin
nati Commercial Gazette is worth
eading:
Washington, Oct. 28.—The pro
posed issue of bonds by Floyd
County, Georgia, is creating more
commotion in the Administration
than anything that has happeued
in some time. A story has now
leaked out about the way in which
Secretary Carlisle smothered an
opinion by the Attorney Geueral
because it did not suit him. As
stated in the Commercial Gazette,
Attorney General Olney was re
quested about a week ago to for
mu ate an opinion on the Georgia
inquiry concerning the legality of
issuing county bonds and using
them for a circulating medium.
This was received by Secretary
Carlisle on Saturday night, and
was so comprehensive and complete
that it created commotion. It cov
ered nearly ail the points included
by Solicitor Reeves, in his recent
opinion, and practically substan
tiated all that Reeves held, except
that it qualified the declaration
regarding such bonds not being
liable to the State bank tax.
The Attorney General held that
if such bonds bore interest they
would uot be subject to that tax,
but non-interest bearing bonds
would have to pay the same tax as
that imposed on the State bank
issue*.
CARLISLE GETS EXCITED.
When Senator Carlisle read the
opinion he siezed his uat and rush
ed across the street to the Attorney
General’s office. Rushing into the
room he exclaimed: “You hav 0
gone too far in thia matter You r
opinion was not asked as to wheth
er such bonds would be subject to
the State bank tax. i want you to
draw up another opinion covering
only the inquiries upon which I
requested an opinion in my for
mal letter.”
The Attorney General explained
that the comprehensive character
of his opinion was due to his hav
ing supposed his judgement was
desired on the accuracy of Solicitor
Reeves’ opinion.
Secretary Carlisle stated that
he desired nothing of that nature.
The opinion was at once with
drawn and the short decision yes
terday given in these dispatches
substituted. It is probable that
the question of taxation will soon
he raised ; then the opinion as first
prepared but afterward suppressed,
will be made public.
• ACCIDENTS BY RAIL
Bne Wan Killed and Twa Trains
Came Together.
Valdosta, Ga., October 24. —A
breakman named Williams on the
Georgia Southern and Florida rail
road was crushed to death on a
side trach here this morning while
coupling cars.
The cars came so close together
that he was smashed up badly, and
as soon as a slack was made he fell
and was dragged along by the
break beam, killing him instantly.
Williams was regarded as one of
the best men on the road and was
popular.
On the same road a collision oc
curred in which two engines were
wrecked. The passenger engine
which pulled the train from Ma
con was running in a side-track
when a wild engine came up the
track like lightning. They collided
within a hundred yards of the de
pot, but hurting no one.

RAILROADERS RUN IN. !'
Alfred Kenedy and J. M. Ward ''
Bound Overon a Charge
of Larceny From the
Person, in Recor
der's Court.
Police court This morning shook’
off its accustomed quietude, and ■
displayed a slight return of its old' '
time activity and excitement, and
the occasion therefor, was the trial
of two stalwart young railroad 1
men, Alfred Kennedy and J. M.
Ward, on the charge of “larceny
from the person.”
It appeared from the evidence
that a crow d of railroad employees
went down to the C. R. & C. depot
to view the mangled body of Mr.
Thompson, the man injured by tl e
train yesterday, and while in the
jam, one of them, Mr. Joel Collins
had his pocket relieved of a hand
some gold watch.
Suspicion pointed towards Ken
nedy and Ward, and they were ar
rested, and after a preliminary in
vestigation before Recorder Spul
lock they were each placed under
a bond of $125 to answer any in
dictment found by the Superior
Court grand jury. The bonds will
doubtless be made today and the
defendants permitted to return to
their work.
The explanation given by a
number of friends of the young
men is that they, including young
Collins, were celebrating pay day
and had gotten a genteel young
jaglet on and that in a spirit of
humorous indulgence, “just for
fuu|” “a joke” the watch was ab
stractedfrom young Collins pocket
but subsequently its whereabouts
were made known when policemen
Wimpee and Logau arrested the ac
cused,
Thu may have been intended
for a joke, but the judgment of the
jokers was in grevious fault when
they selected Joel Coilins as their
subject. His facial expression
should have warned them that he
was not a “joker.” It is serious un
o sadness.
WOMEN WITH PISTOLS.
A Sensational Shooting Match in
a Mississippi Town.
Meridian Miss. Oct. 25. — Quite
a sensational shooting scrape oc
curred at the union depot in this
city last night. The parties to the
affair were both white women. Four
pistol shots were fired by Mrs.
Nettie Morris, the proprietress of a
shooting gall ry. at her assistant,
Miss Minnie Ross.
Three of the bullets pierced the
body of the latter , woman, inflict
ing dangerous wounds. Thecause
of the shooting, as given by Mrs.
Morris was that through the ma
chinations of Minnie Ross a separ
ation was brought about between
her husband and herself in Mem
phis, Tenn.; that through the wiles
practiced by this girl she left her
husband and $4,000 in property'
The wounded girl gives as her ac
count that Mrs. Morris was jealous
of the attention pud her (Minnie)
by male friends.
Both are tolerable young and
good looking, aud have been all
over the country during their lives.
The would-be murderess is in jail
to await the result of the girl’s
wounds
