EATING IN SWEDEN.
Peculiarities of the Restaurants
in That Country.
Table methods in Sweden differ
from those in most countries. An
institution which exists everywhere
and proceeds all meals is the so
called “smorgaabrod.” Thia is the
high table in every restaurant
room spread with small appeti.|
zurs, such aa shrims, anahovies,
cold roast meats, radishes, tinned
fishes and an abundance of bread
and I utter. To this the guest
walks up and helps himself to bis
sati-facliun, at the same time or
dering of a wai'er what he desires
or his next 1 ater course. When he
has finished his standing meal
he takes a seat and is ready for
the main meal, which is very 'ike
what is to be had in other coun
tries.
The visitor will be impressed,
with ths fresh milk, cieam and
butter which are set on the table in
lavish quantities, a circue stance
which is easily t-xplaimd when it
is remembered that Sweden and
Denmaik provide Great Britain
and rorne other parts of tb« world
with a gnat part of their dairy
products. The system of helping
yourself also extends cfen 'o ike
entire meal, as at such pl»''«s as
railway stations vherea h 1 i.

A great fable bet with nil abun
dance of most (delicious viands if
placed unguarded at the nercy es
the guest®, who each for himself
walks to the soup dish and dips
out what he wishes and lakes it
away for silent consumption at the
small side tables near by.
When the soup is finished he
casts the dish, aside, tak<<B a new
one and goes to the fish salver, and
so on throughout the When
be is done he walks up to rhe cash
ier, reports what he has eaten and
pays the bill, which is never ex
travagant.
A feature of the table in Sw<-d<u;
R the so-called •fi tdbrod” or flat
which a atrangsr is n»t apt
to like, It occurs in the form of a
Wafer extended to about the cir
cumference of a bucket top. It hue
a hole in the middle into w hich one
might almost poke his h»ad and
adopt, the thing as a new mode of
collar.
It is mostly very dark and is
made variously, usually' from
wheat or barley and mixed often
with mashed potatoes and peas.
In the far North it is sometimes
made of ground-up bark. It is very
brittle, cracks under the teeth like
nothing else on the bill of fare, and
tastes at times like coffee, at other
times do worse than a left over
from last Christmas cracker.
It is set on the table 10 or 15
thicknesses high, a joy to those
who like it and a pest to those
who do not, and would like to see
the space with something else.—

Virginia Hats.
Palm leaf hats made by women
aud children in Virginia were ex
ported to France fiO years ago,
where they undersold English hats
of the Baine material. Then as
now the price of such work was ex
tremely low, and it was said that
the earning of the women and
children producing 50,000 hats
were less than $7,000. A single
commission house of that time in
this city sold $90,000 worth of
such hats made in one county of
Virginia.
The Parthenon Injured.
After the earthquake in Greece
the Parthenon at Athens was exa
mined by acotnmission to see if it
had been injured. The commiss
ion now reports that though the
damage is slight, it would be well
to etrengthan the architraves with
iron girdtrs, and to protect the
building from rain, which has
been causing small peices of stone
to fall ever since the Acropolis
was destroyed by the Venetians in
the fifteenth century,
