IN GREAT DEMAND.
Washington, Nov 14 —Amor g
the reports coming to the depart
ment of state from the consul.
| abroad upon the new serum treat
ment for diptheria is one from Con
sul General Charles de Kay, at
Berlin, exhibiting the efficiency of
the new treatment by comparison.
He says that the hospital at
Scherein, near theJungfread Heids
has forty horse# under treatment
for the serum, yet the demand for
it has been so great that tl.e sup
ply ran out.
In the trea'ment with it for dip
theria of children under four years
the most difficult sort, the death
rate sunk to less than 11 per cent.,
while during October, after the ex
haustion of the serum supply, the
death rate rose to over 60 percent.
Ths serum is costly, as it takes
a lang time to secure it, and it
must be ussd fresh. It is given out
that it takes nine months, and
sometimes a year, to get the ani
mals, under three years old, un
der condition.
One animal does not furnish
much blood ata time, say teo
quarts. It Biust be carefully fed be
tween dates of tapping, and in
time the strength of its blood, as a
’means of curing, gives out. Abso
lute certainty is not ascribed te
the cure, and especially in cases in
which other diseases are present,
should not be considered a fair test
of its virtues. It is not at all a
panacea.
