IN THE COORT
what Was Done Yesterday. Ad
journed Until December 10th
In the superior court yesterday
the following cases were disposed
of.
London Taylor, colored, charged
with simple larceny, was found
guilty, and sentenced for three
years in the penetentiary.
Ed Hatcher and Jeff Burnett,the
negroes charged with having made
the assault on Monroe Long, were
found guilty and each sentenced
to five years in the Penetentiary.
They richly deserve their pun
ishment for the cruel mahner in
which they beat up the young
man.
The court takes recess until
December 10th, when it will con
vene again. The city Court will
also meet on that day
Treasurer J. B. Hill j
In another column will be found
the announcement of Mr. J. B. |
Hill for re-election to the office of j
County Treasurer, an office he
has held for six years, with credit
to himself and the commendation
of the Grand Jury, for his excel
lent system of keeping his books
ready to settle at any time.
Os course he will be re-elected
without opposition.
It is a well known fact that Mi •
Hill has been strongly urged to
become a candidate for lax Col
lector. Mr. Hill had nothing per-1
sonal to gain by a change, but be- I
ing ever ready to serve wherever
the majority seems to indicate,
he took the matter into considera
tion, but requests us to say that it
would be impossible for him to b ■
elected to that office without goii g
into the market and buying up th- j
purchasable vote and doing other
unfair things that he is conscien
tiously opposed to, and that he
does not believe his friends would
want him to do.
Knowing Mr. Hill as we do,, and ,
with this explanation, no tairj
minded person can find fault with ,
him for his action and decision in
this matter.
We bespeak for him the same
full support for Treasurer that h ■ i
has always received and so lielnv
deserves.

FREE < AGE OF
SILVER.
The free and unlimited coinage of
silver, the product of American mines, !
at the old ratio of 16 of silver to i of
gold, is the only solution of and
remedy for the disturbed and unsatis
factory condition of trade, manufac-1
ture and general business of the coun- ;
try. The surreptitious 4 act of 1873, |
divorcing silver and gold in our mone-1
tary syster-i, was a crime of untold
magnitude. It was the rankest kind
of class legislation in favor of the
wealthy against the producers of
wealth, and hostile to the prosperity
ot the U nited States. It was an act
of treason because done at the instance
of a European syndicate and for bribe
money, “giving aid and comfort to
our country’s enemies.” To shield
the guilty parties, the well authenti
cated facts, often published, have been
vigorously denied.
The Enquirer will continue to ex
pose this unpardonable crime until
right and justice are done the people
by the full restoration of silver to its
old companionship with gold. We
need the assistance of the people in
disseminating the truth, to which end
we invite all in your selection of pa
pers for the coming season to include
the Enquirer, that costs only SI.OO a .
year. (Issued twice a week.)

wards given to club raisers. Sample
