“IF HE RETURNS,’’
The Pension Is to Cease—A
Strange Bill Before Congress.
Washington, December 5. —The
senate spent only thirty-five min

ed one rather queer pension bill,
pensioning a woman whose hus
band left home twenty years ago
and who may still be living, but
contains the unique provision that
the pension is to cease ‘‘if the sol

Mr. Peffer, populist, of Kansas,
contributed some half dozen pro

proper disposition of the bodies of
senators and members who die at
th' capital; the repeal of that
part of the resumption act which
relates to the sale of bonds, and
the government control of freight
and railroads.
A resolution was offered by Mr.
Blanchard, democrat, of Louisian

looking to the payment of the
bounty on the sugar crop of 1894,
under the terms of the McKinley
act.
A cloture resolution was offered
by Mr. Vest, who gave notice that
he would ask action on it tomor
row, and two resolutions were of
fered by Mr. Lodge, republican, of
Massachusetts, calling for infor

in Nicarauga, and for Rear Ad

to the Sandwich islands. The ear

to the memory of the late Repre

THEHUSTLEROF ROME WEDNESDAY DECEMBER F lff<
KLUSTER OF
BULLS EYE SHOTS
Every body and the Atlanta j
Locking Glass, knows I like Jake,
Moore, Georgias new assistant
keeper of the Penitentiary. But
then every-body who knows him
real well is in the same boat, and
are helping me paddle. I shall hate
very much to see Jake leave Rome,
but then if I could only have the
exquisit pleasure of seeing the first
meeting which occurs down at
Kramer, when Jake and “Lord
Beresford” shall meet. My, My, but
wouldn’t it be a treat. Suppose we
get the Rome Board of Trade to
gether and let ’em send the “Lord”
a message.
***
Speaking about Jake, reminds
me that I can truthfully say, that
he is almost as luckey a man as he
deserves to be. And I say this be
cause of recent events. During
Conference, the popular Sheriff
and his clever family, entertained
aquartett of methodist ministers,
and being a baptist by birth ami a
Sheriff by profession, Jake knew
just how to make the good men
have a r *al good time—But aside
from this.
When the ministers left, for
some cause or other one of them
left four pairs of brand new sox —
just Jake’s size, too, for he had on
a pair this morning. Now think of
it; here Jake Moore has been ele
vated from what Seab Wright and
Dr. Felton, in their purity, calls
the rottenness of Floyd county
politics, and is called to Atlanta to
serve his state, and Baptist though
he be, a Methodist minister fur
nishes and equipps him xvith sox.
*
* *
I was talking to County Com
missioner Clayton this morning
along this line and speaking of the
great self-sacrafi.ce which Jake’s
Conference friend had made, but
the Commissioner failed to see it
that way, giving as his solution of
what I thought a dispensation,
that the preacher who best the sox
found that he had been assigned a
charge in Tom Watson’s district
and knew that he had no more use
for such darned duds. “Oh, this
prosaic world! ”

at once, then order your shroud,
