The effects of a few shots from
this column, aimed at one feature
of our morning neighbor, have been
startling. The fact is those shots
have completely silenced their bat
teries of brag ami bluster about a
“Matchless telegraph service.” The
truth of the busines is, no paper
that takes its telegraph news srvice
hot from tin—Express office—can
afford to brag on the wires—be
cause its an injustice to the Pot
mettal foundries. See?

Now that economy is to be prac
ticed all along the line, why does
not our excellent Board of Roads
and Revenue put the salary of its
clerk down to about SSOO or S6OO
per year. I know of many capable
young lawyers who will fill that po
sition, and who would be glad to
take it at this figure. Then when
we take into consideration the com
paratively light duties of the of
fice and the fact that the clerk is
also furnished with a handsome of
fice, with all the modern conveni
endes why SS(X) is a good salary —
The people think so —and in my
opinion the people are right.

Mr, J. L. Bass tells me that in
about twenty days the contractor
will begin elevating the floor of
the uptown store of Bass Bros. &
Co., that is the Park’s store. The
ground floor will be raised 2| feet
and the pavement put on the
grade. Bass Bros. & Co. are among
Georgia’s foremost merchant and
Rome may well feel proud of such
a firm of energetic and enterpri
sing young business men. There’s
one thing upon which you can re
ly, if there is a bargain in Rome,
its more than apt to be found at
Bass’store.

For the most accomadatiug cotton
thieves on earth, recomend us to the
Flatwoods. I was talking to| clever
Rhode Hackney yesterday, who is (
now one cf the Flatwood’s leading
citizens, and he tells me tha the rais

and picked and stole one bale of it.
That was clever, wasn’t it? Must
have been a pickpocket to pick a
