Madeline Pollard, who achieved r
notoriety by suing Congressman 1
Breckinridge for breach of promise. ‘
Referring to the mattar Miss
Pollard tonight said: “I can’t see
anything wrong in answering the
advertisamant. I don’t know who (
got the letter. The advertisement |
wag signed by initials only. In my (
letter I said I was not French, but |
that I felt myself capable of per- ,
forming the duties of governess. <
‘‘l thought that was an oppor- ,
tunity for my (doing something,
but I never received a reply. I .
have answered a number of adver- •
tiiementstin the hope of receiving
employment, but every one has ,
t«en a failure. ” Miss Pollard said ,

HORRIBLE DEED.
Cassville, Mo., Dec 19.—At Dry
Hollow eight miles South of this
place, a tragedy has resulted in
the death of a mother and twe
children. During a fit of despon

VICTORIOUS JAPS.
New York, Dec. 19.—A dispatch
from Shanghai, dated December
17th, says: “The first and second
Japanese armies are marching di
rect on Tien-Tsin. They are now
North of Nieu Chwang, which
place has been captured. Several
other cities have also been taken,
all without any serious fighting.
The force of the two armies com
bined amouats to about 72,000
men.
The Shanghai officials of the na
tive city have removed their wives
and families to the foreign settle
ment for safety in anticipation of
an outbreak, which is feared in
consequence of the imposition of
the war tax. ”
KILLED AND EATEN
Hermosillo, Mex., Dec. 19.—A
party of citizens which left here a
few weeks ago to explore Tiburen
Island in search of gold mines
which according to their statement
are to be found, returned with one
missing.
The Seris Indians, the Cannibal
istic tribe, who occupy the island,
made no hostile demonstration to
ward the prospectors, but Edward
Flores, a youug member of the
party, became separated from his
companions, and although a
search was made for him he could
not be found. It is feared that he
had been kidnaped by the Indians
and killed aud eaten.
Big Sensation
Toledo, 0., December 16.—Tole

by a broach of promise suit, the
damages being laid at 175.000,
brought by Miss Lucy M. Gruber
against Roswell F. Messinger.
She alleges the engagement of mar
riage was made on January 8,1893.
The plaintiff is a handsome
young lady of 22, of excellent
family. M. Messinger was recently
appointed deputy county treasurer
and by the death of Calvin Bron
son, his grandfather, he recently
became heir to SIOO,OOO of valu
able real estate in the business
section of the city. This event oc
curred since his engagement, and,
it is hinted, his alb red worldly,
prospects led to the estrangement
