Henry Smith, living near Irving
ton, East of this city, attempted
suicide this morning by hanging,
but he was discovered by his wife,
who cut him down in time to save
his life. The only reason assigned
is that Smith sold a load of hay in
the Indianapolis market, yesterday
for $9, and white returning heme

LIFE INSURANCE CASE
After three Weeks spent in l
the trial the Jury rendered
a verdict in, 21 minutes
for the full amount
of the claim
Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 20.—As
ter three weeks consumed in it
trial and one day’s argument the
jury to-dav, in 21 minutes after
receiving its instructions, returned
a verdict in the famous Dr. Fraker
insurance case.
It was in favor of the relatives of
Fraker, who sued five companies
who held policies on the doctor’s
life when he was drowned at Ex
celsior Springs. Mo., July 10, 1893.
T he policies aggregated $44,655
and the plaintiffs have b en grant
ed judgment for the full amount.
The different companies and
amounts follow; Provident Savings
and Life Assurance Society of New
York. $10,675; Kansas Mutual of
Topeka, $10,660; Hartford Life
Annuity Insurance Company, $16,-
930; Supreme Lodge Knights of
Pythias of the World, $3,195;
Modern Woodmen of Ameica, $3,-
i 195. .
The benefactors named in the
policies are two sisters of the de-
I ceased doctor, Mrs. Cynthia Hat,
I field and Margaret Magruder, o.f
| Macon County, Missouri, and six
1 orphan nephews and nieces living
in Oregon, Washington State and
California.
The case has been one of peculi
ar interest, and has been desper
ately fought by both sides. The
trill has been very costly to the
defense.
Dr. H- C. Fraker was a physi
• cian with a moderate practice, A
! Excelsior Springs, Mo., July 10
i 18S>3, Yvhiie on a fishing trip in
Missouri, he slipped from the bank
and was drowned.
Not the least trace of him could
be found, and his complete disap
! pearanee being so exceptional
i -several of the insurance companies
refused to pay the policies held by
' him.
It was asserted that it was a con
spiracy to defraud, and that the
doctor swam the river and escaped
in the garb of a woman. To
strengthen this theory the defense
introduced thstimony to show the
doctor changed his sex every seven
years, and had awaited such a
transition to practice the decep
tion.

Rome, N. Y., December 20. —
I’he greatest surprise Romans have
had in many years was caused to
day by the news that John F. Biel
by, the trusted Cashier of the
Central National Bank, was a de
faulter of $27,000.
The shortness in the accounts
was first suspected about two weeks
ago by National Bank Examiner
J. Van Krauken, of Schenectady,
who visited the institution at that
time. On Monday of this week he
unexpec ?dly re-appeared and con
tinued his investigation anil made
the above discovery.
Bielby idm* tted th it ha had t k

R line, disappeared M niday even

known by his wife. Bielb ", says n>
one is at fault besides himself, ami
that Gillette hid nothing to* d
with the defalcation.
Bialby’s method of covering up
the defalica ions, whic have ex
tended over about a’ year and >
half, was to receive funds fr >m
depositers and concesl the record
of such receipts from the a tminer,
making the li ibilities of the bink
seem te be leas than they really
were. This was carried ent mainly
by means of certifi nite* of d 'posit.
