And Will Tell His Story-New Sen (
sations Coming
New York, Dec., 20.—Superin
tendent Byrnes heard of testimo
ny given against him by John Mar
rett a few minutes after that wit
ness testified. He immediately
locked himself in his office at po
lice headquarters, and for an
hour examined papers bearing on
the matter referred to by Marrett.
Afterwards, the Superintendent
said of Marrett-:‘‘All he says is 1111
true except that he came to my
house Tinder false pretense. When
the proper time comes 1 shall tell
my story in the proper, place. ”
Further than this the Superin
tendent absolutely refused to say
anything.
Marrett said before the comniit
i tee today that he had gone to the
home of Superintendent Byrnes
with a letter to “Mrs. Byrnes,”
which had been given him by an
other Parkhurst agent; that the
Superintendent took the letter,
read it, took him by the collar,
threw him into the parlor aid
forcibly detained him there ; that
Byrnes threatened tu have him
imprisoned for lb years, and by
force and threats forced him to
tell all he knew of the case of
Charles W. Gardner, another Park
hurst detective who had been ac
cuses! of extorting blackmail from
one Tillie CWtou. Marrett also
said that Superintendent Byrnes
had trumped up the case against
Gardner.
Senator Lexow expressed his
opinion that Superintendent
Byrn»s had a right to extract in
formation from Marrett. Then the
witness said: “He would have
sent me to .prison except for one
reason—we wera both Masons. ”
SAY THEY KNOW THE MAN
Who Burned the Tally Shee s in
the Chicago Mayoralty Ejection.
Chicago, December 21.—Elec
tion Commissioners Bade nock and
ex Police Inspector Ross went be
fore the grand jury today and te.-,-
tifiad that they had learned the
identity of the man who had burn
ed or otherwise destroyed the tally
sheets in the Swift-Hopkins may
ora ty election.
They asked the grand jury to
delay the investigation pending an
arrangement they hope to make
with the man who did the lawless
work. They refuse to disclose the
man’s name, but stated that he is
at present out of the city and that
they hope to induce him to return
and tell all he knows. His story
i
will reveal, it is said, that he was j
simply the tool of men high in
power and that he did the work
for the money there was in it.

THE 0!L CAN EXPLODED
And in a Moment Mr. and Mrs
Cook Were Wrapped in
Flames Dying a Most
Agonizing Death Con
scious to the Last.
Elyria, Olno, December 21.
This morning J. B . Cook took a
can of oil and poured the contents
onto some kindling in the kitchen
stove.
There were some live coals un
der the kindling. The blazing oil
flew in all directions, completely
Mr. Cook and his wife, who had
rushed to his resue. They ran out
to the yard, a mass of flames, and
screaming in agony.
The neighbors gathered and at
tempted to smother the flames,
but this was not accomplished un
til the victims were burned so that
the flesh hung in shreds.
Mrs. Cook lived until noon and
her husband died this afternoon.
His mind was perfectly clear ai d
a lawyer was called in to draw up
his will. He left his property to
his children. The house was near
ly destroyed by the tire. Mr. and
Mrs. Cook were about GO years old
and came here a short time ago)
from Kipton.
