PUGILISM
Mt Chas. A. Davis Arranges a
Match for February.
3lr. Chas. A. Davis, of Birming
ham, champion middle weight
pugilist of the South, has been in
the' city several days visiting
friends.
Yesterday he received a letter
from a prominent Louisville sport
ing man, seeking to arrange for a
match in that city for February
between Mr. Davis and Tom Lan
sing, of Louisville.
jlr. Davis will go to Nashville,
where he is instructor of boxing in
t )P Nashville Athletic Club, just
after Christmas and make all the
arrangements for the fight.
The fight is for SI,OOO side bet,
and the particulars about the purse
is to be perfected yet •
Mr. Davis has a splendid record
as a pugilist —having fought twelve
battles —10 of which he won and 2
w ere draws. He is a quiet, pleas
ant looking gentleman, and the
last man you would take for a
prize fighter.
Yesterday when asked by a re
porter if he did not think the kill
ing of Bowen would put a stop
to pugilism, he said :
‘•Yes, for a few months, but
that feeling will soon die out. Bow
en was killed by the fall and not
the blow. The fights that have tak
en place in New Orleans have car
ried thousands of dollars there,
and the law makers are not going
to pass any ligislative acts against
the sport. ”
