Kirk b'arrur defied the old say
ing that he who defends himself
in a ci urt of j istic*> has a fool for
a client. Indeed, Farrar showed
ed sense in saving a fee. He made
just about as g •od a def u use as un
attorney would h. ve made and he
would have been convicted any
way. Si he lias saved a lawyer’s
fee and has that m ich to go to
ward his tine, whatever that may
be.
There are two Farrar brothers.
They own a sawmil 1 and the old
one, Ki ik, ad mitted that he bought
two rolls of leath< r belting from
Walter Bohannon in June 1896.
He denied knowing that it was
stolen and exonerated ins young
er bro h>-r, Floyd.

Drew Peoples and young Tom are
partners.
Blackw li is night watchman in
the Western and Atlantic’s freight

were employed to burn the ware
house, which was well insure,
though there was nit much stock
in it. Hill has weatened and jt is
said will confess ami the State
will use him lor a witness. H i is
well connected.

L'tna, 0.. Oc’.2o.—The country
about, Si>ukh Warsaw, It) miles
south-east of the city, is in a state
of intense excitement over an at
tempted outrage upon Miss Delia
baker.
Miss Baker, while returning
Ir.mi the home of a neighbor, was I
ii.tercepted by a stranger. The
nan made a rush toward the!
young girl after having followed
her for a quart >r of a mile. She
was wi bin a f w rods of her home
t>nd made a dash so: the yard.
As she started the stranger -
pulled a revolver and fired. The
bullet struck the fence near the
girl who readied the threshold in
in safety. On eutering the
house the girl went into spasms.
Dr. Hurlbert was summoned I
while several neighbors, having !
heird the screams of the girl star-1
ted at once on the track. A- M.
Wonnel! drove to this city and j
secured bloodhounds
By the time he reached the :
scene of t,he attempted outrage a
large crowd of determined farmers
had gathered, all well armed, and,
started in pursuit of the scoundrel
who was traced tome distance
when the trail was lost by the
hounds.
The girl is -till in a precarious
condition. The community about
the scene of the attempted assault
is greatly aroused and the man
will probably be summarily dealt
with if caught.
