| IN A CHICAGO CHURCH.

THE FIRST NETIiODIST

tor's Music.
( hicr.ge, Nov. 4 .—Amid strains
| of martial music from a full fledge
; brass band the congregation of the
Erst Methodist Church, at Clara
and \\ ashingtou streets, assemble
for the service Sunday night.
I pon entering the church, io
stead cf the customary choir and
minster, worshipers saw a glitter
ing array of brass buttons, gilt
braid and highly polish intruments
A military band occupied the ros
trum behind the pulpit and exe
cuted the music.
The faces of small boys in the
audience beamed with delight,
aid airs floating out into the
street made the passer-by gaze
wonderingly at the windows in
quest of something to inform him
of wha, vasin progress beyond
them.
This departure from the trodden
path of religious service by the
pastor, the Rev. Dr. Brushing
ham, was followed by another on
the part of the congregation,
\\ hen the band bad finished play
ing a lively selection in waltz time
the audience applauded and cheer
ed heartily. The demonstration
by his flocked was not frowned on
by th« pestor. On the contrary,
his eyes sparkled with good hu
mor as he stepped tip into the pul
pit and said :
‘‘l don’t wonder you feel like
cheering; this music is wtiat the
people all want and we must
have.”
