FOOT BILL
BILL PASSED BY AN OVER
WHELMING
MAJORITY YFSTERuAY
Pia Day In Both IL uses Yes
terday.
Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 9.—Both
(tie house and the senate yes
terday furnished sensations in
the matter of possible Itgisla
tion. The hcus- ] '»w J tb« ant -
football bill by ai< almost un
animous vote, and the senate
reconsideied the vote by which
the pr< hibitory amendment to
th * Bush bill was lost. This
leaves tne entire temperance
question in the upper house ex
actly as it was when the legisla
ture met and the proh bition
element feels that it has scored
a victory. As a matter cf fact,
the reconsideration simply en
tang'es the senate into a fuither
meaningless discussion, and
threatens to seriously impede
whatever legislation ccme to it
from the lower b dy.
During its short eeesian the
senate was occupied only in the
consideration of Senator Turner’s
mo'iou for reconsideration and
adjournment was taken almost
immediately after the vote was
counted. In the house the anti
football bill came up or final
passage and was adopted by a
vote of 90 to 3. Immediately
afterwards Representative Fel
der, cf Fulton introduced a bill
making an attempt to rape
punished with the death pena'ty
and the reading of the
title of the bill startid the
house into applause. Governor
Atkinson urges the passage of
such a measure in hie annual
message, and is little doubt that
the bill will be enacted into law
at the present session.

1 'Eg cold-b’ooded murder of the
officer while he w i&on duty, the
early hour of the evi nii g and the
fact that it occurred direc lj op
posite the union d qiot, it the very
center cf the ci y, makes the
tragedy (ne of the moH startling
sensations that tias occurred in
Atlanta in several years.
The killing occurred in the w hole
sale liquor house of Louis Steiuau,
at No. 41 Wall street, whL'h had
been closed by the sheriff yester
day.
Among the eight persons arres
ted during the evening suspected!
of having been implicated in the
dastardly crime a.e L. Steiuau,
Julius Siiiiou and Walter O’Quinn'
all of whom were connected with
Steinau’s business and whose
arrest is explained only on he
theory that they desired to secure
certain papers or valuables in
Steinau’s place before the store is
taken charge of by the receiver
appointed by the court yesteiday
The shadows of the even ng had
scarcely «hut out the light of the*
departing daj'when tin re were 1
h ard four or five pistol shots 1
in the v holesale liquor bouse of
L. bteinuu on \\ all street.
The shots were heard by a
number ot men who were in the!
bairoom adjoining the wholesale
house, and which was once own
ed by Steiuau and is now said
to belong to Julius Simons. Some'
of those who heard the reports
cf the weapon ran to the glass'
door which separate! the two
stores and they beheld the form
of a policeman standing in the!
next room, and he was making
d 1 sperate efforts to open the door.
Mr. J. T. who was in
the saloon, ran a'ound to the'
front door of the wholesale store
and was the first p rson to reach
Policeman Pond r. The officer I
askid him to help him, and he did
so. laying him upon the fl or. The
blood was gushing I cm a wound
in the breast, and Mr. Maxey saw
that the policeman was desper
ately woui ded. He ran to the
door and called for assistance.
When he letiirued he found the
policeman unconscious and speech
|,-es. He had died without being
able to say one word which would
throw any light upon the murder.
But there was but one eye wit
