A PIGS ttELII
GIHLTEI) ON THE EYE-LID
GE A MAN
OPERATION A SUCCESS
“■ *• • ♦ •
And The Patient On The Road
Os Recjvery,
Loodon. Nov. IG The surgi
cal operation at Dublin, already
briefly described, consisting of
grafting the ayelid of a pig to that
, of human being, has excited great
interest among surgeons.
Ihe operation was ptrforintd
by Dr. Maxwell in the Dublin
Ophthalmic Hospital. The patient
was John Ryan, an am y an ion
er who for some years had been
under treatment for ophthalmia.
Owing to ihe loss of the left eye
id a cure was found impossible
because il the rye was exposed io
light without the protection of a
lid the disease would return.
Dr. Maxwell selected a healthv
pig and a screen was erected
which inclosed the patient’s cham
ber and made it open only to di
rect light from the sky. The pig
was struck in the usual way, and
asj its life blosd poared out
Dr. Maxwell with a swift stroke
of bis lancet ent off its eyelid.
The edge of the patient’s eyelid
where the attachment was to he
made had also 1,.., n cut. Dr. Max
well wheeled around while the
pig’s evelid vyae still living and
attached it to tie- man’s eyelid.
I'hs piece was instantly made
fast by stich°s.
A rep >i t received from Dublin
today says that the operation so
far as been most sueceseful. The
adhesion of the pig’s eyelid to
the patient’s is perfect and there
■s every prosp ct that the desired
< lj‘»ct will be attained.

few weeks ago Hugo Hutram was
awakened early one morning by a
peculiar noise at his porch. He
found a stranger lying theie bully
wounded. He gave his name as
E ivvards, and Sheboygan, Mich.,
as his residence. He died in a few
days.
The true stcry has just been
told. Edwards and a tramp had
quarreled, and it was agreed that
they should fight a duel with re
volvers at night.>n the Laks Shore
track, distance, thirty feet, each
to fire at the finishing of the
coun ing of throe, and to advance
as they fired.
The tramp got the first shot,
which took effect in Edwards’
lungs, the second, as he advanced,
going thr ugh Edwards’ hat, while
Edwards fired to no purpos- 3 .
Ast is antagonist neared him
Edwards saw that his time had
come, ami began t<j beg piteously,
and said if only spared he would
never whisper the name of the
other. The tramp, thus appealed
to, relented, and then half-dragged
Edwa'ds to the half way house,
where he was left and died soon
afterwards.
