JAMES S COTHRAN
THE ATHENS BANER PAYS
HIGH TRIBUTE.
10 THE MEMORY OF ONE
Os The Bravest Os The Brave
Os The Cause.
Editor Carlton, of the AtLeut
Banner, puys the following beau
tiful tribute to the memory of
James S. Cotheran, the bn vt
South Carolinian who has many
relatives and friends in this c’ty.
The Banner says:
In the death of Judge James 8.
Cothran of Abbeville S. C. and a
notice of which appeared in our
columns on yesterday there was
removed from South Carolina one
of her most worthy and honorable
cit'z. iiß and from this life one
nature’s greatest noblemen.
It was our pleasure and honor to
enjoy the intimate acquaintance of
Judge Cothran for many years.
Wo were in college together we
were fellow comrades in the army
of Northern Virginia and we close
ly associated as brother memb 'rs
of the 50th and 51st Congresses.
Therefore we write of him not
only feelingly hut knowingly and
can of truth say that no nobler,
braver, or better man ever served
hip country in time of war or in
time of peace,
Asa student in old Franklin
college he was the universal fav
orite of both faculty and students,
leavinitig college he moved to
South Carolina and studied law
with Judge Perrin, whose daugh
ter he afterwards inarri d. Edu
cated refined and in every sence a
cultured Christain gent'eman. he
soon forged to the front in legal
p-ofession of the Palmetto State j
When hie adopted state, (being a
a native born Georgian) seceeded
from the American Union he was
among the first, to buckle on his
in behalf of the country he ’
loved so well and in defense of a
cause he so gallauty served .
Raising one of the first companies
to leave South Carolina bis com
mand was sent to Virginia, where
he gallently led his brave soldiers
in evpjy principal battle fought
by the army of Northern Virginia.
He was some five times severely
wounded but survived the war
and as gallantly and worthily ser
ved his State in times of peace.
A few years after his return
home from the artnj he was chos
en judge of his judicial circuit
without opposition and in which
honored and responsible position
be served, until elected from the
bench, without ever being a candi
date, to the 50th Congress of the
United States. He served as Con
gressman in the 50th and 51st
Congresses and then voluntarily
retired to resume his law practice.
He was soon made general coun
sel for the Southern railway sys
rem for the State of South Caro
lina, and which position he occu
pied at tbe time of hie death’
When in Congress, Judge Coth
ran, though quiet dignified, and
unassuming, was regarded as one
of the ablest and truest men from
the South . Be commanded, at all
limes, the highest respect confi
dence and esteem of both demo
crats and republicans.
Judge Cothran, though a man
at all times full of business and
full honors, found ample time to
eerye his church aud the cause of
Cbf-istianity, looking at all times
to the higher welfare of himself
and his fellowman. He was an
elder in the Presbyterian church
at Abbeville and was ever promi
nent in the work of his church
aud denomination. Judge Cothran
leaves behind him as a rich le
gacy to his family and his friends
a name honored of all men a
charact* r blameless and which
none can assaii. and a record
which will be as honorable
and enduring as lhe memcry of
tbe ages:
Truly, a good man has gone.
Truly, we have lost a friend.
