LAST NIGHT
SHOT BY A TRAP-GUN
«

Did The Ri:-t.
Gur Hm'abep, until about 4.80
o’clock thiß morning, trusted op
erative of the Romo Cotton Eac
tory, is today a ruuch’y mutilut-d
and disfigured man as heocccupies
a ward at the Itme-geucy hospi
tal .
Huckabee has an ugly wound ii
the right leg just nelmv the knei
and whi e Dr. Harbin is lopefu
Hucabee may yet have to go o;
crutches when he leaves for th<
Georgia penitentiary.
Besides the wound in the leg.
Huckabee has a a fine load of No.
8 bird shot in his right arm and
in the left side of his face and
head.
Huckabee is a victim of his own
rascality and from all accounts
rich’y merits his mi-'oitune.
For some weeks the Rome Fac
tary stoic, on Bth Ave. has been
subjected to weekly raids from
thieves end manyi.iellectualefforts
had £ been made by Supt. McLin
and his staff of assistants, to apt
[nehei.d the guilty parties.
About two weeks ago, after the
store bad bee i robbed of goods
and the store till of its email!
change. Mr. -McLin had asked
the city for a special officer Mr. [
John Copelin was detailed and |
he and John Fernandez
spent a half dozen nights in the
store office, hoping to capture the
burglar.
But the guiity party was onto
the move and kept shv . S ion af
ter Officer Copeland was with
drawn the store was again en
tered.
This put the manager on his,
mettle and new plans of defense •
a era worked out. Mr. Boh Canter
the night watchman was put in
,n;d With him Chari e Anderson
I the colon d vatclniei:.
One night last week these men I
say Hucabee p aine to the front
of the store and tried the window.
He also went to the rear window
and tried it but failed io get in.
On Monday morning, Mr, Can.
ter and Anderson left the store
about 4 30 to fire up the engine at
the factory. When Mr. Wolfe, the i
st >re-keeper opened up be saw I
that the store had bean entered
and the till relieved of about $3
This put the watchmen in an ugly
position but at the same time put
them on notice of the hour the
burg'ar was m iking his cabs.
Monday Mr. Wolfe bought a
single barrel shot gun and had the,
barrel sawed elf eh >rt. U ithout
letting the guards know of it, he
set tne gun on asm ill b >x on th i
floor undei the counter, and con
nected the trigger by a cord;
through a pulley to the money j
till. The contrivance was simple
enough but proved most effective
as the badly lacerated leg of
Huckabee will he r witness.,
This morning al about 4 o’clock
Canter left the office and as was
his custom called up some the
factory operatives and* with hn.
lantern disappeared into the big
mi l. But in the null once the
watchman left his lantern and by
a flank movement joined Ander
son the negro was m the
store office;
Huckabee lives in one o. thetac
t<,ry cottages and believing the
coast clear < pened the back win
dow of the store and m a lew «>°-
ments his cupidity led him to the
cash drawer. He pulled the till
open and fired the trap gun that
will he a lame, if not a
cripple for ife.
From the till behind t he counter
he sprang to the front dear some
15 or 20 feet away 1h” guards m
the office, not knowing of the
midpr the counter,

Mr. Canter had a shot gun and

g ar was ordered, by Chief Sbrop
'hjre, carried to the Emergency
hospital and a dray did tar ,’o’k
Huckabee is about 35, and has
bf'e.i married severxl years, but
has no children. Had he paid more
attention to swarming Hucka-bees
and less to robbing his neignbors
he wou'd today beat his post,
boiling cloth and earning his $. a
day, instead of being under arrest
in the ward of a hospital, maimed
for life and with a term m the
Georgia penitentiary staring him
in his lead punctured countenance
Huckabee has been an employer
of the Rome Cotton Factory for
the past six or seven years. His
wife often worked in ths factory
and when she did she earned from
GO to 75 cents per day. He had
the confidence of his employers
land could, without money, buy
what he wanted at the company
store. In plain words th°re was no
necesitv for Huckabee to steal .
While being hauled to the hos
pita! this morning Huckabee was
as blood-as a hog and yet when
told how he had come to shed that
guilty blood every honest man said
“it was good for hitn.” A’hile on I
| the vay to [he hospital a large j
j butcher knife dropped out of
Huckabee’s pcck<-t. This knife
I was not quite as l ing as a Cuban
machette. It had a couple of large
scollops taken out of the blade.
This had been done by the burg
lar so that he could bo k u’-der
and raise the rod-bar that held
the window sbutteis toge her.
Huckabee is “resting easy” at
the hospital this afternoon, says
the physicians. The physician?
•e: terrain hopes of bung able to
I pull Huckabee through wi'hout
amputating his leg.
Mr. Canter and Charley Ander
son are to he congratulated upon
the goed job they c id—not to kil I
but to help a thief in mutilating
himself.
Huckabee wont ba able to proy e
an alabi.
