The mass-meeting for farmers

called to ord-r and Hon. J. Lind
say Johnson made chairman, with
farmers Fred G. G >vau and John
C. Reese as secretaries.
1 he meeting vas declared ready
tor resolutions and oratory. It
was addressed by farmers J. L.
Bass, D. B. lianiil on, Sr C. P.
Morton, Alex Whi e and M. L.
Palmer. Thes* l speeches in most
cases showed the gentlemen to be
masters of the art ot eh qu nee as
well as the knacs of pulling a bell
cord over a mule.
A brief resolution was pissed in
which those present acknowledged
themselves as heartily in favor of
a reduction of the acreage oi cot
ton. This resolution also pledged
the mass meeting, collectively at I
least, to a reduction of said acre- ;
age.
The f diowing named influential,
popular and successful planters
were named as delegates to repre
sent the farmers of Floyd county
in the South th Cotto 1 Grower’s
Associa'ion which convenes in
Atlanta on Diceinoor 14‘h.

Wessson Miss, says:
“ Your correspond, nt has just
interviewed one of tht most prom
inent men in this section, who
left the sceneof the inassaere "of
the Brolm family this morning.
Ihe accused negro, Charley Lew
is is being tried before Justice D.
I. Holmes he has given testimo
ny implicating two other negroes
—Will Powell and Andy Smith
v ho are now in custody.
My informant is positive that
the negroes will not le lynched
tonight, but that the recent
lynching at Monroe will be
imitated, making it public and
each negro will be made to carry
pine knots to burn the other.
The trial is being conducted in
a lawful manner. The commit
tee hss charge of the prisoners,
and will not permit them to he
sent to any jail. During the trial
Lewis broke down and confessed
saying; It’s mighty hard for me
jto suffer for what somebody else
; has done*. ”

“Lewie is a mulatto abiut twen
ty-three years old, and married.
It is believed that a general
clean-up will be made in that
section of the country, and that a
number of negroes will be lynch

Brown Smith, a respectable wbi'e
farmer, abou 35 years of age, were
bruta ly killed with a club in the
hands of Charles Lewis
The house is <ft the main road
and no white family lives within
two miles of it, although several
negro families live rear. It was
lone of these negroes who, on Wed
nesday some time hetwee noon
and darkness, crept up to Smith’s
I house and assaulted Mrs Smith,
then brained her with a club, To
forever hide the crime, ho began
on their six children, only spar
ing a lube, which he left untouch.
One of tbe children, a little
girl five years of age, reganined
consciousness, and when hei fath
er entered after his day’s work
was finished, she told him the
name of their assailant. The
mother and four children were
found lying in the yard, ehowing
how they had struggled to escape.
The father and husband imme
diately sounded the alarm and a
posse was organized and late yes
terday afternoon tbe negro was
captured. ____________

Town says it is alleged there that
the troops on board her Majesty s
ship the Avoca were half starved
during the voyage. Men offered a

ployed to keep the soldiers away.
